    Abstract: A cutter element for use in a drill bit, comprising a substrate and a cutting layer. The substrate comprises a grip portion and an extension portion, where the grip portion has an insert axis and an extension portion including an interface surface having a first apex. The cutting layer is affixed to the interface surface and has a cutting surface having a second apex. The cutting layer is shaped such that when a plane passing through the first apex and lying parallel to the insert axis and normal to a radius from the insert axis, the plane divides the cutting layer into major and minor portions and the major portion has a major volume that is at least 60 percent of the total volume of said cutting layer. Alternative embodiments of the present invention include variations wherein the first and second apices do not coincide and wherein the interface surface of the substrate is not axisymmetric. Using these variations, cutter elements having sizeable variations in thickness are constructed.

    Abstract: A high performance rock bit journal seal is formed from a composite material comprising an elastomeric material and a nonelastomeric polymeric material. The polymeric material is preferably in the form of fibers woven into a sheet. The elastomeric material includes at least one lubricant additive. The composite 'seal' material comprises a number of repeating sheets of polymeric fabric that are bonded together with the elastomeric material. In one embodiment, the seal includes a body formed entirely from the composite material, in which case both the static and dynamic seal surfaces are the same. In another embodiment, the seal includes a first body portion formed from the composite material, and a remaining body portion formed from a noncomposite elastomeric seal material. Seals formed from the composite seal material display enhanced wear resistance, reduced coefficient of friction, and improved high-temperature stability and endurance when compared to noncomposite seal materials, thereby both extending the useful life of seals formed therefrom and of rock bits that employ such seals.

    Abstract: An annular seal 62 comprises an elastomeric seal body 70 that is configured to fit within a seal cavity 64 of a rock bit. The seal 62 comprises a first seal surface 72 for providing a seal along a rotary cone surface formed between the seal body and cone 66, and a second seal surface 74 for providing a dynamic seal between the seal body and leg 68 of the rock bit. The annular seal 62 further comprises an extrusion prevention member 76 that is positioned adjacent a surface of the seal body 70 between the first 72 and second 74 surfaces. The extrusion prevention member 76 can be integral, partially-attached, or independent of the seal body 70. The extrusion prevention member 76 is formed from a material having a hardness that is greater than that of the seal body 70. The extrusion prevention member 76 is positioned along the seal body 70 at a location adjacent a groove 80, formed between opposed members of the rock bit to act a physical barrier to prevent the seal from being extruded therethrough.

    Abstract: A drill bit having one or more nozzle retention bodies attached by a single orientation mounting is disclosed, as is the associated method for its manufacture. The upper end of the nozzle retention body has a fluid inlet in communication with the internal fluid plenum of the drill bit, and the lower end of the nozzle retention body includes a fluid outlet that defines an exit flow angle. The exit flow angle is angularly disposed from the longitudinal axis of the drill bit. The nozzle retention body may advantageously be chamfered or the like to provide a reduced cross-sectional area at the lower end of the nozzle retention body. The oute r surface of the nozzle retention body (and attached hardened elements) may extend substantially to gage, or may fall short of that diameter.

    Abstract: A method for simulating the drilling performance of a roller cone bit drilli ng an earth formation may be used to generate a visual representation of drilling, to design roller cone drill bits, and to optimize the drilling performance of a roller cone bit. There is provided a method for optimizing a design of a roller cone drill bit, comprising simulating the bit drilling through a selected earth formation; adjusting at least one design parameter of the bit; repeating the simulating the bit drilling; and repeati ng the adjusting and simulating until an optimized design is determined. There is also provid ed a method for designing a roller bit cone, comprising simulating the drill bit drillin g through an earth formation, the simulating comprising determining, based on a means for determining an axial force, an axial force acting on each of the cutting elements, determining the axial force acting on each of the roller cones, based on the axial force acting on the cutting elements, rotating the bit and redetermining the axial forces acting on each of the cutting elements, repeating the rotating and redetermining fo r a number of rotations, and adjusting at least one bit design parameter, and repeating th e simulating and adjusting until a difference between the axial force on each one of the rollercones is less than a difference between the axial force determined prior to adjusting the at least one initial design parameter.

    Abstract: A sealed-bearing drill bit 10 for use in an earthen annulus is provided having a dual seal arrangement. The drill bit 10 includes at least one leg 20 having a journal segment 23, and a roller cone 18 mounted upon the journal segment 23, forming at least one bearing cavity 75 therebetween. An annular primary seal 38 is disposed between the bearing cavity 75 and the earthen annulus. An annular secondary seal 52 is disposed between the annular primary seal 38 and the earthen annulus and is capable of substantially preventing the ingress of debris from the an earthen annulus to the annular primary seal 38.

    Abstract: A drill bit has at least one roller cone with at least one cutter element having a base portion. The base portion is adapted to fit in a socket on the cone. From the base portion projects an extending portion which is the cutter head of the cutter element. The cutter head has an elongate crest. The crest is non-rectilinear and can be arcuate, S-shaped, or J-shaped. Also disclosed is a method of manufacture of the cutter elements and cutter elements with non-positive draft, i.e. where the cutter head does not taper within an envelope described by the base portion.
