    Abstract: A cutting tool includes a tool body having a longitudinal axis and a cutting face, a plurality of blades spaced azimuthally about the cutting face and extending at least laterally through a gage region, and a plurality of cutters disposed along the blades. At least two different types of back reaming elements may be disposed on a transitional surface between the gage region of at least one blade and a connection end of the cutting tool. Alternatively, at least one back reaming element may be disposed on a transitional surface between the gage region of at least one blade and a connection end of the cutting tool, and a wear resistant material provided on or in the transitional surface.

    Abstract: A fixed cutter drill bit (200) includes a bit body (202) having a cutting face and a side portion. The bit body (202) is formed of matrix material. A plurality of blades (208) is azimuthally spaced about the cutting face of the bit body (202). A plurality of cutters (210) are disposed along the blades (208) and arranged to have an extent from a corresponding blade front face of 0.1 inches (approx. 2.5mm) or less. A majority of the adjacent cutters (210) are also positioned to have spaces therebetween that are less than 0.25 inches (approx. 6.4mm). At least one gage pad (224) is disposed along a side of the bit body (202). The at least one gage pad (224) has a circumferential width that is at least about 2 inches (approx. 5cm) or results in a total gage pad width equal to 30% or more of the circumference of the bit (200). At least one wear-resistant element (1227) is disposed on the gage pad (224) near a leading edge of the gage pad (224) to provide wear resistant protection near the leading edge. Additionally, the bit (200) includes at least one back-reaming element (1428) positioned on the bit (200) to back-ream formation in a path of the bit as the bit (200) is pulled from a wellbore. Also disclosed is a method of brazing a cutter to a fixed cutter drill bit by maintain the temperature of the braze material between the liquidus and solidus temperatures while filling gaps between cutter and cutter pocket with braze material.

    Abstract: The invention provides a fixed cutter drill bit for drilling through unconsolidated, highly abrasive formations. The bit includes a bit body having a cutting face and a side portion. The bit body comprising carbide matrix material. A plurality of blades azimuthally spaced about the cutting face and a plurality of cutters disposed along the blades. At least one gage pad is disposed along a side of the bit body and includes wear resistant gage elements formed of a material more wear resistant than the matrix material forming a portion of the gage pad. The wear resistant elements have a rounded surface and are embedded in gage pad material proximal a leading edge of the gage pad to provide a rounded wear-resistant edge or surface proximal the leading edge.

    Abstract: Thermally stable diamond constructions comprise a diamond body having a plurality of bonded diamond crystals and interstitial regions disposed among the crystals. A metallic substrate is attached to the diamond body. A working surface is positioned along an outside portion of the diamond body, and the diamond body comprises a first region that is substantially free of a catalyst material that extends a partial depth from a surface into the body, and a second region that includes the catalyst material. The diamond body first region extends from the working surface to depth of at least about 0.02mm to a depth of less than about 0.09mm. The diamond body includes diamond crystals having an average diamond grain size of greater than about 0.02mm, and comprises at least 85 percent by volume diamond based on the total volume of the diamond body. The body can include natural diamond grains and/or a blend of natural and synthetic diamond grains, and is treated to form the first region. Before treatment, a portion of the body to be treated is finished to an approximate final dimension so that the depth of the first region of the finished product is substantially the same as when treated. During treatment, catalyst materials as well as non-catalyst metallic materials are removed from the diamond body to provide a further enhanced degree of thermal stability.

    Abstract: A drill bit having increased resistance to erosion and hence increased resistance to failure has erosion resistant material in the area surrounding cutter pockets. The drill bit includes a steel bit body having blades (304, figure3), cutter pockets 308 with cutters 310 disposed on the blades and recesses 312 formed in the surface of the cutter pockets. Erosion resistant 316 material is disposed within the recesses. Claims are directed to a drill bit or method of manufacture of such a bit having erosion resistant material disposed in recess formed along an intersection between a cutter pocket and an outer surface of a blade and to a drill bit having erosion resistant material disposed in recess formed in an interior portion of the surface of the a cutter pocket extending along at least a length of the pocket.

    Abstract: A polycrystalline diamond body 57 has a top surface 52, a side surface 58, and a beveled surface 54 therebetween. The body is made from bonded diamond crystals. The body is attached to a substrate 60. There is a region 56 where the gaps between the crystals are free of a group VIII metal. There is another region where the gaps between the crystals contain a group VIII metal. The region free of the metal may extend over various sections of the top, side, and beveled surface of the body; it may be in the region of 0.04-0.08mm deep. The separate regions can be formed by treating only a portion of a body whose gaps initially all contain the metal. Leaching is one such treatment. The group VIII transition metal could be a catalyst for sintering the diamond crystals.
