Abstract: 1,269,068. Product control in supported catalytic olefin polymerization. SOLVAY & CIE. 1 Aug., 1969 [26 Aug., 1968], No. 45117/71. Divided out of 1,269,067. Heading C3P. Olefins are homo- or co-polymerized in the presence of hydrogen and a catalytic system comprising the reaction product of a halogencontaining transition metal compound and a solid support activated by an organometallic compound to form a product having a melt index (M.I.) of at least 4 g./10 min. and a narrow molecular weight distribution (C D less than 10), the process being carried out at a hydrogen concentration of 10 to 20 gms. per kg of olefin (to achieve said M.I.) and with control of temperature (85‹ to 120‹ C.) and/or a molecular weight decreasing agent (to achieve said C D ). The support or activator may also be modified to influence these properties. In examples (mostly comparison), ethylene is homo- or copolymerized with butene-1 in the presence of (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Al or (i-C 4 H 9 ) 3 Al/TiCl 4 -MgO or hydromagnesite/H 2 and optionally octanol.
