Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record, reproduce, and evaluate appropriately intrinsic information (UDI) of an optical disk medium by using arbitrary data.
SOLUTION: A PN signal (pseudo random signal) is generated by a PN signal generator of a UDI encoder section 10 at the time of recording a UDI signal, this signal is write-controlled by a formatter, data are supplied to a disk recording device, and a disk recording device records the UDI signal in a CD. CONSTITUTION:An objective lens 25 is adjusted in a radial direction by rotating a holder of the lens 25 in a biaxial actuator 25a. Besides, the lens 25 is adjusted in a tangential direction by rotating the actuator 25a and a skew base 23 around a horizontal shaft 22. By rotating an adjusting screw 29 of a rotation adjusting means 24, in other words, the gap between an optical base 23 and the base 23 in this area is adjusted, while a tilt is adjusted by rotating the base 23 supported rotatably around the shaft 22. According to this constitution, both the tilt of the lens 25 and a skew can be adjusted easily, the base 23 is supported only by the shaft 22 which does not need machining of high precision, the cost is reduced and unstableness in a tracking direction is prevented.

CONSTITUTION:An optical head contains a semiconductor laser 21 which forms a light source, a polarized beam splitter 22, a 1/4 wavelength plate 24, a rectangular prism 25, an objective 26, a photodetector 28 which detects the laser light reflected by the splitter 22, etc. in one body. Such an optical system is shifted toward the optical axis of the lens 26 as well as in the direction rectangular to said optical axis for purposes of focusing and tracking respectively. Therefore it is possible to reduce the size of the objective 26 as well as the distance between the objective 26 and the prism 25 in comparison with the case where only the objective 26 is shifted. As a result, the length of the optical head can be reduced in the optical axis direction of the objective 26.

Consequently, the positioning of the photodetectors can be easily adjusted and the detecting sensitivity can be improved by reducing the diameter (b) of the center part 16a of the space dividing half mirror 16.
