Abstract: In a telephone apparatus, a modem device, a computer apparatus and a communication terminal device, the connection to different kinds of communication networks is realized with a simple structure. A data input/output means for converting a received analog signal into reception digital data to be supplied to a computer apparatus and for converting transmission digital data which is sent from the computer apparatus into an analog signal to be transmitted, a sound input/output means for inputting and outputting sound based on an output sound signal and an input sound signal, and a connection switching means for connecting the telephone circuit to the sound input/output means in the case of connecting to another telephone apparatus and, in the case of connecting to another computer apparatus, for connecting the computer apparatus to the sound input/output means are provided, and in addition, an output sound signal extracted by the computer from the reception digital data is outputted from the sound input/output means and an inputted input sound signal is converted into transmission digital data by the computer apparatus, so that sound can be inputted and outputted via a common sound input/output means in the case of connecting to another telephone apparatus or another computer apparatus.

Abstract: A communication system, method and apparatus which can maintain favorable communication quality without imposing much burden upon a user. A plurality of communication networks are formed between first and second communication apparatus. Upon starting communication between the first and second apparatus, communication quality of the communication networks is measured using at least one of the communication apparatus. One of the communication apparatus is selected for communication based on a result of the measurement. The first and second apparatus may be a base apparatus and a portable terminal apparatus, respectively, for use in the home, in which the base apparatus receives a television broadcast and transmits a selected television program of the broadcast to the terminal apparatus for display thereon. The communication networks may include a radio network and a wireline network. The terminal apparatus may also be adapted to access the Internet via the base apparatus.

Abstract: A television reception system is disclosed by which a television broadcasting program can be enjoyed at any place in a home without being influenced by connection to an antenna cable or a communication circuit and which can be connected to a network such as the Internet. A channel selection apparatus and a display apparatus are formed as separate apparatus from each other. The channel selection apparatus receives broadcasting signals, selects one of the broadcasting signals, forms a transmission signal from the selected broadcasting signal and transmits the transmission signal by radio. The radio signal from the channel selection apparatus is received by the display apparatus, and an image based on an image signal of the received signal is displayed on an LCD apparatus serving as a display element.

Abstract: A data processing apparatus constituting a low-cost audio/video data transmission and reception system is disclosed. A reception buffer monitoring circuit 21 monitors the size of receiver data being accumulated in a reception buffer 6. When the size of accumulated data is found to become higher than a high threshold, the circuit 21 causes a reception clock generation circuit 8 to generate a reception clock with a higher frequency. When the accumulated data size becomes lower than a low threshold, the reception clock is generated with a lower frequency. Based on the reception clock fed from the reception clock generation circuit 8, an audio/video decoder 7 decodes the audio/video data coming from the reception buffer 6. This invention applies advantageously to a television transmission and reception system for transmitting and receiving TV broadcast signals.

Abstract: Prior to communication over the Internet and using a different line, a first terminal (1) transmits to a second terminal (2) a set of information including at least an IP address of the first terminal on the Internet (4). Based on the IP address thus transmitted separately, the party at the second terminal (2) initiates communication over the Internet. This establishes direct end-to-end communication (5) between the two terminals (1,2) over the Internet (4). In a communication setup such as an Internet-based telephone call wherein address information about a desired party on the network is not previously known to a calling party, the inventive method allows the two parties to communicate directly with each other over the network on an end-to-end communication basis without recourse to a rendezvous server or like services.

Abstract: A data processor which realizes an AV data transmitting/receiving system of a lower cost. A reception buffer monitor circuit (21) monitors the quantity of received data stored in a reception buffer (6). When a stored data quantity increases above the upper threshold value, the circuit (21) sets the frequen cy of a reception clock generated by a reception clock generating circuit (8) a t a higher frequency. When the stored quantity decreases below the lower reference value, the reception clock frequency is set at a lower frequency. An AV decoder (7) decodes AV data supplied from the reception buffer (6) on the basis of a reception clock supplied from the reception clock generating circuit (8). This invention is applied for a television transmitting/receivi ng system which transmits and receives television broadcasting signals.
