    Abstract: An SQTV processor for converting a video signal received at an interlaced scanning frequency of 50 or 60 Hz, respectively to an interlaced scanning frequency of 100 or 120 Hz and implementing algorithms of noise filtering and of edge definition, including an analog-digital converter (ADC) of analog input signals of luminance and chrominance, at least a field memory (FIELD MEMORY_1) or more preferably two similar field memories where digital blocks of luminance (Y) value and blocks of values of each one of the two chrominance (U, V) components of said converted video signals are stored, one "First-In-First-Out" (LINE MEMORY) register for digital values read from said filed memory containing the pixels of a whole line of each field, a noise filtering block (NOISE REDUCTION), a sampling frequency converter (SRC) of said fields from 50 or 60 Hz to 100 or 120 Hz, means of conversion of the vertical format (VFC), means of edge definition (PE) enhancement and means of digital-to-analog conversion (DAC) of the processed luminance and chrominance (YUV) signals, is further equipped with means for compressing and coding said converted video signals according to an adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPCM) scheme of said digital values to be stored in said field memory (FIELD MEMORY_1) and means of ADPCM decoding and decompressing of data read from said field memory (FIELD MEMORY_1). The significative reduction of the total memory requisite produced by the ADPCM pre-compression would make the entire system more readily integratable on a single chip.

    Abstract: By relaying on a temporal correlation among successive pictures beside on a spatial correlation of motion vectors of macroblocks of the currently processed picture and by the use of a hierarchical recursive motion estimation algorithm, the hardware complexity of video coders complying with the MPEG-2 standard can be greatly reduced without an appreciable loss of quality of the video images been transferred. The method of motion estimation and a hardware embodiment of a coder are described and performance is compared with a prior motion estimation system.

    Abstract: The video memory requisite of an MPEG decoder effecting a decompression of the I, P and optionally also of the B picture according to the MPEG compression algorithm and requiring the storing in respective buffers organized in said video memory of the respective MPEG- decompressed data, may be dynamically reduced by subsampling and recompressing according to a ADPCM algorithm at least the data pertaining to the I and P pictures before coding and storing them in the respective buffers. Subsequently, the stored data are decoded, decompressed and upsampled for reconstructing blocks of pels to be sent to a macroblock-to-raster scan conversion circuit.

    Abstract: A method of recognizing a progressive or an interlaced content of video pictures during their processing in a coder, comprises the following operations on at least on one of the components (luminance or chrominance) of the video signal: a) defining a macroblock belonging to a frame of the preceding picture having dimensions R*S pixels, a half of it (R/2)*S being placed on the Top field Tp and the other half on the Bottom field Bp; b) for the chosen component of the video signal, calculating a first pair of coefficients (COEFF_1, COEFF_2) equivalent to the sum, extended to all the columns and to all the even row of said macroblock, of the absolute values of the differences among the values assumed by said component of the video signal in the pixels of the same column and of consecutive rows belonging to the Top semi-frame and Bottom semi-frame, respectively, and the sum, extended to all the columns and to each fourth row of said macroblock, of the absolute values of the differences among the values assumed by said component of the video signal in the pixels of the same column and of consecutive rows of the same parity belonging to the Top semi-frame and Bottom semi-frame respectively; c) verifying whether the first one of the coefficients of said pair is greater than or equal to a prefixed first real positive number of times (a) of the second coefficient, incrementing a first counter (CONT_1) at each positive verification; d) incrementing a second counter (NUM_MACROBLOCK) at each macroblock so tested; e) calculating for each row of each Top semi-frame a second pair of coefficients (COEFF_3, COEFF_4) equivalent to for each row the sum, extended to all the columns of each semi-frame of the absolute values of the differences among the values assumed by said component of the video signal in pixels of the Bottom semi-frame of the preceding picture and of the Bottom semi-frame of the current picture, belonging to the row following the considered row and to the same column, and the sum, extended to all the columns of each semi-frame of the absolute values of the differences among the values assumed by said component of the video signal in pixels of the same column and, respectively, of said row of the Top semi-frame of the preceding picture and the row following the considered row, belonging to the Bottom semi-frame of the current picture, respectively; f) verifying whether the second coefficient of said second pair is grater than or equal to a second prefixed real positive number of times ( beta ) the first coefficient of said second pair, incrementing a third counter (CONT_2) at each positive verification; g) incrementing a fourth counter (NUM_RIGHE) at each row so tested; verifying whether the content of the first counter (CONT_1) is greater than or equal to a third prefixed real positive number of times ( gamma ) the content of second counter (NUM_MACROBLOCK) and whether, at the same time, the content of the third counter (CONT 2) is greater than or equal to a fourth prefixed real positive number of times ( delta ) the content of the fourth counter (NUM_RIGHE): if so, considerating the frame composed of said Top and Bottom semi-frame an interlaced one, if not a progressive one.

    Abstract: The memory requisite of MPEG decoders and SQTV (or IQTV) systems may be reduced by recompressing the MPEG decoded data stream before storing pixels in an external RAM. An efficient compression method based on the tree-search vector quantization (TSVQ) as proposed for recompressing video picture data may be rendered even more effective by optimizing the way the quantizer is chosen for quantizing the differences among adjacent pel vectors. The method herein disclosed is based on premultiplying a read-only table using quantized complexity measures relative to the centroids of the tree-like scheme used in the TSVQ processing, producing a plurality of precalculated tables of quantization of the prediction error of a physical parameter of blocks of digital data. For each one of the regions in which a block is divided, the calculated and quantized complexity measure provides an address that selects the most appropriate precalculated table for quantizing the prediction error. A hardware architecture implementing said method is disclosed.

    Abstract: An RGB digital video signal destined to be displayed on a display such as a liquid crystal display (LCD) is converted from the RGB colour space to the YUV colour space. The signal converted into the YUV colour space is subjected to at least a processing operation selected among a sub-sampling operation (24) and a data compression operation (26). The signal is then stored in a memory and the signal read from said memory (12) is then subjected to at least a return operation (28, 30) complementary to the aforesaid processing operation (24, 26). The signal subjected to the aforesaid return operation is lastly reconverted from the YUV colour space to the RGB colour space, thus being susceptible to be displayed on the display.
