Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the conversion of tertiary-butyl-containing compounds to methacrylic derivatives, and more particularly to a process for the conversion of tertiary-butyl-containing compounds selected from the group consisting of alkyl tertiary-butyl ethers, tertiary-butyl alcohol, isobutylene dimer (2,2,4-trimethylpentene) and isobutylene trimer, to methacrolein, methacrylic acid or methacrylonitrile.

Abstract: 1,126,617. Unsaturated aldehydes and nitriles. STANDARD OIL CO. 14 Oct., 1965 [4 Nov., 1964], No. 43643/65. Heading C2C. A process for the production of olefinically unsaturated nitriles and/or olefinically unsaturated aldehydes comprises introducing molecular oxygen into the bottom zone of a reaction enclosure comprising at least two communicating reaction zones at different levels each containing a fluidized solids catalyst capable of catalysing the reaction of olefines with molecular oxygen and optionally ammonia, the zones being separated by at least one foraminous member with at least some openings large enough to allow catalyst passage therethrough and the amount of open area in the foraminous members being at least 7.5 to 50% of the total internal cross-sectional area; introducing into a reaction zone other than that into which the molecular oxygen was introduced : (a) propylene or isobutylene, and, if the product is intended to be a nitrile, (b) ammonia; maintaining an elevated temperature throughout the reaction zones; passing the reactant vapours upwards through the communicating zones containing the fluidized catalyst; and recovering the product produced, the volume of the reaction enclosure upstream of the reaction zone receiving the component (a) and the optional component (b) being from 5 to 75% of the total volume of the enclosure. The catalyst is preferably composed of a mixture of antimony oxide and the oxide of at least one other polyvalent metal, such as uranium, iron, thorium, cerium and manganese. The production of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrolein and methacrolein is described.

Abstract: 1,154,029. Oxydehydrogenation catalyst. STANDARD OIL CO. 9 June, 1966 [10 June, 1965], No. 25829/66. Heading B1E. [Also in Division C5] A catalyst for the oxydehydrogenation of C 4 to C 10 monoolefins to conjugated dienes has the composition A a B b Fe c Bi d P e Mo f O 2 , where A is Group VIII transition metal other than Fe, B is at least one of Sb, Sn, Cu and As, and a is 0.1 to 12, b is 0 to 12, c is 0.1 to 12, d is 0.1 to 12, e is 0 to 12, f is 6 to 12, and the Mo@ may be at least partially replaced by W. The catalyst may be used alone or on a carrier material, for example silica, alumina, thoria, zirconia, titania, boron phosphate, silicon carbide, pumice, diatomaceous earth or clay ,the carrier being used in amount less than 95% by weight of the final catalyst composition. The catalysts may be made by dissolving soluble salts of the metals in water or acid and heating the mixture with an aqueous silica dispersion until a gel forms. The gel is heated to dry it then calcined in air.
