    Abstract: 12,616. Stewart, W. June 6. Saddles and seats. -Relates to a sliding attachment for the seats of bicycles, tricycles, &c. A carrier, which is clamped to t h e saddle and support C by means of the bolt D and nut F, consists of two end plates A connected by two pairs of tubes or rails B. Two pairs of rollers M, Fig. 5, are mounted upon axles I fixed in the side frames G, and are arranged so that the tubes B of the carrier pass between the upper and lower pairs of rollers. The seat is clamped to the axles I by means of the washers H and nuts K. In a modification, the carrier may consist of two strips of metals in which are mounted axles carrrying rollers upon which revolves an endless band which carries the seat.

An ink, from which it is stated copies may be obtained without damping or the use of a copying-press, is prepared from Aleppo galls, iron sulphate, gum arabic, rain water, creosote dissolved in methylated spirit, glycerine, potassium permanganate, sugar, and magnesium carbonate. As an alternative, potassium permanganate, magnesium carbonate, and glycerine are added to copying- ink. The magnesium carbonate may be dispensed with.

    Abstract: 23,924. Stewart, W. Oct. 19. Cutters for levelling wood paving. - Consists in mounting rotary cutters behind an abrading-disk and a rotary brush to prepare and clean the surface. The machine comprises a wheeled chassis 1, propelled through worm gearing 5, 6, 7, 8 from the shaft 4 of a steamengine. The cutters 9, 10, mounted on horizontal spindles, either parallel to the spindles or spirally, are driven by belts 13, 14 from a transverse shaft 19 driven from the shaft 4 through a belt 22. The abrading-disk 23 with a roughened or serrated under surface is rotated through bevel-gearing from the shaft 19, and is adjustable vertically by a bell-crank 26 operated by a screw 27 and a hand-wheel 28. Sweeping-machines.-The rotary brush 29 is driven by sprocket, bevel, and worm gearing from the engine shaft 4 , and is raised and lowered by a lever 32.
