    Abstract: 114,221. Stewart, W. J., and Woolcock, J. April 13, 1917. Piles.-In an extended tube pile, the normal reinforcing units comprise longitudinal rods provided with means for obtaining anchorage at the bottom of the pile and extended at their upper ends to receive continuation lengths of transverse bracing, which are formed as independent cagelike sections slidably movable into position on the reds. These cage-like sections comprise two or more transverse links b , Fig. 2, wound to encircle independently some or all of the longitudinal rods, connected by helical windings c' the pitch of which is maintained by two or more thin rods g; the fixed transverse bracing on the lower part of the pile is of similar form. The main longitudinal reinforcing-rods may have inclined lower portions with simple or looped hooked ends a , Figs. 9 and 10, to engage resiliently a ledge d' on the pile shoe; an annular projection d may also be provide to prevent accidental disengagement. Where the lower end of the pile is in firm ground and no transverse bracing is required at this part, two or more of the main longitudinal reinforcing-rods , Fig. 7, are connected to depending rods i by eye-links l and binding o; the lower ends of the rods i extend to or adjacent to the pile shoe and are inturned and connected to plates p, Fig. 6. The Provisional Specification also states that the longitudinal reinforcing-rods may be attached to an anchor with two or three preferably hinged prongs for engaging the shoe.

    Abstract: 10,976. Stewart, W. J. May 10. Piles.-Concrete or other piles or preparatory piles are provided with loose or integral collars such as a, Figs. 1, 3, and 4, in order to minimize friction. These collars are spaced apart by means of vertical pieces c or c , or in the form shown in Fig. 4, in which the collars are close together, the joint between them is strengthened by rounded bars c inserted into or made in one with the collars. The vertical pieces c' and hollow collars a , Fig. 3, admit air from the top to all the spaces between the collars, and the hollows in these vertical pieces and collars may be modified to provide water jets for sinking or for grouting with cement &c., or this may be done by inserting pipes in the vertical pieces when they are in a straight line. The collars and vertical pieces, as well as the shoe, may be corrugated if desired.

The cores may be covered with paper, zinc, &c. to prevent sticking.

    Abstract: 9204. Stewart, W. J. April 19. Heckling - machines; holders for flax etc.; feeding and transferring flax &c. - Relates to automatic heckling- machines in which the strick of raw flax &c. is automatically secured in the holder, inserted into the machine, heckled completely throughout its length, withdrawn from the machine, and released from the .holder. A number of sheets of heckles, each mounted and arranged as shown in Fig. 3, are carried by endless chains 5, which travel in the direction indicated by the arrows on the chain 21, that is to say, upwards in the centre, the paths of the heckle sheets being indicated by the dotted lines 6. Fig. 1 shows each chain 5 as carrying 20 sheets of heckles, a gap being arranged between the first and last. They are preferably graduated in fineness, the coarsest being those which operate first on the fibre, and are driven at different speeds by double chains 35, suitably guided, one side of the chain engaging with the spring - supported driving-wheel 39, while the other engages with the chain-wheels 24 ... 33 of different sizes according to the speed required. The heckles are cleaned by brushes 44, carried by endless belts, doffer-rolls 50, and reciprocating knives 55, the tow being collected in a box 58 from which it may be removed by a screw or endless chain arrangement &c. Rotary cleaning-brushes carried by the chains 5 may be substituted for the brushes 44, and, in place of the doffer-roll 50, an endless toothed band may be used; or the heckles may be cleaned by other heckles, the teeth of which pass between them. Between the central portions of the series of heckle sheets are two " permanent " holders, 60, 62, Fig. 5, in which the material is held during the heckling operation, the material being introduced into, and removed from the machine, and reversed in the holders, so that it may be heckled throughout its length by means of " temporary " or secondary holders, which, when in the machine, occupy the various positions E, A, B, C, D, and a pair of grippers 128, 129 which are opened and closed by cams &c. The plate 60 of each permanent holder is fixed; and the plate 62 is carried by links from right and left handed screws 64, which are rotated in a suitable direction at the proper times by means of reversible bevel-gearing. The secondary holders are each formed of two plates 77, 79, of which one is provided with lugs 78, and the other carries cams 81 for engaging with them, so that, by rotating the cams, the fibre that has been placed between the plates of the holders may be secured or released. The shaft of the cams 81 is provided with a wormwheel 82, which may engage with a worm 83 near the feed-table of the machine, or with worms 123, 122, which respectively cause the release of the strick for drawing through and reversing, and for securing the holder after reversal of the strick, the proper directions of rotation being obtained in each case by reversible gearing controlled by cams. The secondary holders are inserted into the machine and removed therefrom by an oscillating arm 90, which is operated at the proper times by reversible bevel-gearing and cams, and engages with one of the plates of the holder by means of a T-shaped projection and slot arrangement, the arm 90 being given at the proper times a longitudinal movement on the shaft 91 to effect its engagement and disengagement with the holder. A holder is transferred from the filling- table to the position E, and deposited on arms such as 104, 103 which are carried by quickthreaded screws and arranged so that they can be turned to one side, or, by rotating the screws, to be raised and lowered as desired. The first portion of the strick is heckled with the secondary holder in the position A. This holder is then raised to the position B, while another holder, which has been lowered to the position C, is further lowered into position A to have the lower portion of the flax heckled. The flax is now reversed in the holder at B, the unheckled portion being gripped by the bars 128, 129, while the holder is unscrewed and lowered to the position D, where the holder is again screwed up and turned through . 180 degrees by means of the wheels 137, 169, after which it is raised to the position E, where the second half of the strick is heckled. When the heckling operation in the position E is completed, the permanent holder is opened, and the secondary holder engaged by the end of the arm 90, and returned to the filling-table. At the filling-table, the plate 77 of the holder is released, and, by means of a pair of reciprocating slides 147, 148, the released plate 77 with the heckled flax thereon is moved to the right, while another plate 77, on which a strick of raw flax has been placed, is moved into position beneath the plate 79 to be secured thereto by the rotation of the cams 81. At the next movement of the arm 90, the plate 77 with the heckled flax thereon is moved by the table 148 to the left into position to have the finished flax removed and replaced by raw flax. The whole of the heckling-mechanism is enclosed in a dust-proof casing 170, Fig. 7, provided with a door 171 which is normally closed by a weighted and slotted lever 174, but is opened automatically for the insertion and removal of the holders by reason of a projection 172 on the lever engaging with a slot or projection 173 on the lever 174. A modification is described, in which the shaft 91 of the arm 90 is brought nearer the filling-table and the centre of the machine than in the arrangement described above. An alternative arrangement of the machine is described, in which the holders are inserted and withdrawn horizontally instead of vertically. In this arrangement, a holder is employed in which the plates 184, 185, Fig. 13, are drawn together or separated by three or more sets of worm gear 186. The worm-wheel 186 is mounted to slide on a stud 187, which passes through the plate 184 and screws into a nut 188 fixed in the plate 185, both holder plates being provided with projections 205, 206, which rest upon angle-irons during the heckling operation. The sequence of operations is analogous to that above described, the variations in the mechanism corresponding generally with the requirements of the horizontal feed and delivery.

Moulds.-An expansible core for moulding reinforced hollow concrete piles comprises sections of lagging surrounding plates 2 , 2 , 2 , 2 , Fig. 1, provided with rectangular holes 3, through which passes a square key 4. Metal plates 5 cover the openings between the sections. The ends of the piles are formed with thick shoulders 6, Fig. 3, provided with holes adapted to receive reinforcing- rods 7 when two lengths are connected. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the pile ends are formed with ribs 9, which overlap and are connected by reinforcing-rods 10.

The screwing and unscrewing spindle Q is driven by bevelgearing r , r .     Abstract: 19,300. Longworth, W., and Stewart, W. J. Aug. 28. Heckling-machines.-Relates to the transferring- devices of heckling-machines two of which are arranged side by side, and in which the holders are automatically clamped and unclamped and transferred from a main channel to a cross channel, and vice versa, by turntables such as are described in Specifications No. 17,437, A.D. 1899, and No. 16,010, A.D. 1901, and consists chiefly in pivotally mounting the turntables on a stationary part of the framework instead of upon the ends of the rising and falling main channels. The turntable C, Figs. 2 and 4, is mounted on a spindle c supported in bearings c in a bracket c which is rotatably mounted on a stud c carried by a part of the framework B. The turntable receives a holder a from the rising and falling main channel a, which then rises and swings the turntable through a quadrant by means of a connecting-link D, lever d, and bevel-gearing d', so that it comes opposite to the cross channel. By means of a bevel-wheel c keyed to the fixed stud c and a bevelwheel c on the turntable spindle c, a second quadrantal movement is given to the turntable, so that when it comes opposite to the cross channel it has turned the holder from a vertical plane into an horizontal plane. In machines such as are described in Specification No. 17,437, A.D. 1899, this secondary movement is not required and the turntable is bolted to the . bracket c . A safety-clutch device is provided between the lever d and the bevel-gearing d by loosely mounting the lever upon the bevel-wheel spindle d , to which it is connected by the engagement of a V-projection on the lever with a corresponding groove in a spring-pressed disk E, which engages with a key on the bevel-wheel spindle. In a modification, the link D, lever d, and bevel-gearing d are replaced by a bridle-rod connected to the main channel and actuating the turntable bracket by means of a crank on the bracket. In another modification the turntable H, Fig. 10, is fixed to a sector-shaped shoe h mounted to slide in a circular guide h carried by a bracket h pivoted on a spindle h . The stud has an upwardly-projecting twisted strip k engaging with a pair of rollers l carried by a bracket on the main channel a, so that as the channel rises and falls the rollers acting on the twisted strip turn it and the turntable through a quadrant and bring the turntable opposite the cross channel b. By means of a bridle-rod M attached to the shoe h, the secondary quadrantal movement is given to the turntable. A device for transferring the holders from the main channel to the cross channel is shown in Fig. 12. A lever N mounted on a fixed stud n is coupled to the ordinary catch-bar for moving the holder along the cross channel, so that the lever is operated by the catch-bar and moves the holders from the turntable into the cross channel. The lever N also controls another lever n by means of a roller device n , the lever n having a spring catch n adapted to move the holders a' out of the main channel a into the turntable. A device for transferring the holders from the turntable to the main channel has a bell-crank lever o, Fig. 14, pivoted in a fixed bracket o actuated by the catch-bar lever P and adapted to engage with a snug a on the holder a .

    Abstract: 113,375. Stewart, W. J., and Woolcock, J. May 2, 1917. Piles.-In forming concrete piles, reinforced or otherwise, by driving a tube, filling the tube with plastic concrete, and then withdrawing the tube, means inserted in the tube before filling are withdrawn after filling so as to break up any arch in the concrete and also to relieve friction between the concrete and tube during removal of the latter. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the disturbing means comprise pivoted triangular links e, e carried by a tube &c. C. The form shown in Fig. 2, for use where a central member forms an obstruction in the pile tube, comprises tubes h, h assisted by a cross-piece i and carrying pivoted diamond links j. Where the concrete is inserted in a semi-plastic state, water may be added through the tubes c, h, h , which may be perforated, during their removal.

In one form, the core is formed of wood which is expanded by moisture, the ribs 1, 'Figs. 1 and 3, forming the core being retained by a slotted yoke 3 embracing pins &c. 2. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the ribs 7 are expanded by double wedges 9 connected thereto by dovetail joints 8. Hollow beams of square section with solid ends may be made by using a core of sand which is removed after the concrete has set by blowing or washing it through holes left in the beam.
