Abstract: A partial oxidation burner and process for the manufacture of synthesis gas, reducing gas and other gas mixtures substantially comprising H2 and CO. A hydrocarbon, oxygen-rich gas and, optionally, H2O or some other temperature moderator are introduced into the reaction zone of a synthesis gas generator in which, by partial oxidation at an autogenous temperature in the range of about 1700 DEG to 3500 DEG F. and a pressure in the range of about 1 to 250 atmospheres, said synthesis, fuel, or reducing gas is produced. For example, a hydrocarbon is introduced into the reaction zone by way of the inner assembly of a novel multitube burner, and a mixture of oxygen-rich gas and steam is passed through a coaxial conduit disposed about the outside of said inner assembly. Said inner asembly comprises a central conduit of circular cross-section, having a plurality of parallel open-ended tubes extending downstream from the exit end of said central conduit and in communication therewith. The tubes terminate in a surrounding nozzle, which is the exit end of the coazial outer conduit.

Abstract: A burner for the partial oxidation of pumpable slurries of solid carbonaceous fuels in which the pumpable slurry of solid carbonaceous fuel in a liquid carrier is passed in liquid phase through one passage of a burner comprising a retracted central coaxial conduit, an outer coaxial conduit with a converging orifice at the downstream tip of the burner and, optionally, an intermediate coaxial conduit. The downstream tips of the central conduit and the intermediate conduit, if any, are retracted upstream from the burner face a distance of respectively two or more say 3 to 10 for the central conduit, and about 0 to 12 say 1 to 5 for the intermediate conduit times the minimum diameter of the converging orifice of the outer conduit at the burner tip. A pre-mix zone is thereby provided comprising one or more, say 2 to 5 coaxial pre-mix chambers in series. The free oxygen-containing stream is passed through a separate passage of the burner into the pre-mix zone, in which mixing takes place with the slurry of solid carbonaceous fuel and liquid carrier. From 0 to 100, say about 2 to 80, volume % of the liquid carrier may be vaporized in the pre-mix zone. The multiphase mixture of reactants is then discharged into the reaction zone of the free-flow partial oxidation gas generator by way of the converging orifice of the outer conduit at the burner tip. Synthesis gas, fuel gas, or reducing gas is thereby produced.

Abstract: Burner to mix several separate part streams of pumpable suspensions of fuel in a carrier liquid and liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons, and oxygen-containing gases for the production of a gas mixture in a partial oxidation gas generator, has a central flow path, surrounded by a coaxial tube with a separate top inlet. The outlet of the latter is downstream from the outlet of the central channel, forming a premix zone with a length of two or more times the diameter of the outlet of the outer tube. Spacers between the coaxial flow elements create one or more channels between them and ensure that both flows reach the premix zone simultaneously to produce a multiphase mixture. This burner, has a very low pressure loss and can be quickly adjusted as regards a higher or lower output, without loss in stability or efficiency. It can be used for a wide range of fuels.

Abstract: Synthesis gas is generated by partial oxidn. of normally liq. hydrocarbon streams at 1800-3500 degrees F using a design of burner injection assembly having three separate convergent concentric nozzles. The oil and O2 contg. gas are injected at relative velocities through the two central orifices such that atomisation of the oil takes place downstream from the burner. The third outer annular stream carries the moderator gas (generally steam) which functions to minimise turbulence of the hot prod. synthesis gas. Typical flow rates are liq. hydrocarbon 10-100 ft./sec., O2-contg. gas 110-600 ft./sec., and moderator gas at 55-300 ft./sec.; relative velocity difference of hydrocarbon and oxygen streams is maintained at >=100 ft./sec. The design prevents damage to the burner head caused by erosion and corrosion effects due to the high temps. involved.

Abstract: Synthesis gas is mfrd. by the partial oxidn. of a normally liquid hydrocarbon oil at 1800-3500 degrees F with free O2 in the presence of H2O or CO2 as a temp. moderating gas (TM gas). The free O2-contg. gas is introduced into the reaction zone through the central nozzle of a triple orifice burner, a stream of the oil carried as a fog in the TM gas is introduced through an outer coaxial nozzle whilst a stream of the TM gas issues through an intermediate, annular coaxial nozzle as a sheath of uniform density and volocity. That sheath separates the free O2 from the oil for a substantial distance downstream of the nozzle and so prevents the O2 from reacting with the oil or recirculating synthesis gas close enough to the nozzle tips to damage them.
