Abstract: A corrosion sensor (20) for sensing corrosion includes a housing (28) and a device (36) for jointing the housing (28) to a wall of a pipeline (10) that receives a fluid (24). The sensor (20) also includes a rupture member (44) which extends across a portion of the housing (28) to define a seal chamber (48) in the housing (28). The rupture member (44), upon rupture, provides an opening to the sealed chamber (48). The rupture member (44) is formed of a material and thickness such that the rupture member (44) will fail from corrosion before the enclosure wall will fail from corrosion. The sensor also includes a sensory device (100) which is connected to the housing (28) at the sealed chamber (48) to signal a rupture condition.

Abstract: This is a process and apparatus for continuously separating a liquid mixture comprising particulate carbon produced by the partial oxidation of a hydrocarbonaceous fuel, water, and liquid organic extractant into two separate immiscible streams i.e. a stream of particulate carbon-liquid organic extractant dispersion and a separate stream of clarified water. The subject apparatus may be referred to as a carbon decanter and comprises a closed pressure vessel whose horizontal cross-section is circular. Thus, the decanter may be shaped like a vertical cylinder or may be spherical shaped with discharge ports in the top and bottom. The liquid mixture of particulate carbon, water, and liquid organic extractant is charged into said vessel by way of a conduit which terminates at a position within the vessel along the vertical axis about 1/4 to 3/4 of the vessel height and below the interface level which is formed in said vessel when the two immiscible liquids separate by gravity with the water forming a pool at the bottom of the vessel. Alternately, the decanter may be charged through two concentric pipes. A horizontal radial nozzle terminates each pipe. By this means the aforesaid mixture of immiscible liquids may be introduced into the decanter by way of an annular passage located between said pipes. Further, simultaneously a separate stream of liquid organic extractant may be passed through the center pipe and discharged adjacent to the interface level. The dispersion of particulate carbon-liquid organic extractant separates from the water and may be removed by way of the top port as a continuous stream. Simultaneously a continuous stream of clarified water may be removed from the bottom port.

Abstract: D# 76,187-C3-FB PARTIAL OXIDATION PROCESS A partial oxidation process and control system for continuously producing synthesis gas, fuel gas or reducing gas in which one process fuel is replaced by a different fuel without shutting down or depressurizing the gas generator. This multifuel process is not tied to one particular fuel and reacts slurries of solid carbonaceous fuel and/or liquid or gaseous hydrocarbonaceous fuels. Suitable burners for introducing the feedstreams into the gas generator comprise a central conduit means radially spaced from a concentic coaxial outer conduit having a downstream exit nozzle, and providing a coaxial annular passage means therebetween. In other embodiments a twosection burner having a high turndown feature is employed that comprises a central conduit; a central bunch of tubes positioned in said central conduit; an outer conduit coaxial with said central conduit and forming an annular passage therewith; and an annular bunch of tubes positioned in said annular passage. A control system is provided for switching the type of reactant fuel stream flowing through either the central conduit means or the annular passage means of the burner or through either one or both sections of a two-section burner and adjusting the flow rates of the reactant stream of free-oxygen containing gas with or without mixture with a temperature moderator and if necessary to introduce supplemental H2O into the reaction zone to maintain the temperature and weight ratio H2O/fuel in the reaction zone at design conditions for the partial oxidation reaction without stopping production of the product gas.

Abstract: PARTIAL OXIDATION PROCESS D# 77,738-F A continuous process for preventing the build-up of metals from the hydrocarbonaceous fuel feed in a partial oxidation system in which about 80-100 wt.% of the carbon-soot produced is recycled to the gas generator. By the subject process a significantly large portion of the metals and metal compounds i.e. ash in the soot-water feed stream to the decanter become concentrated in the grey water that separates out in the decanter in the carbon recovery section. The concentration of ash suspended in the grey water may be then easily reduced in a solids-liquid separator with or without the addition of a flocculant and prior to recycling a portion of the grey water to the gas quench tank and/or gas scrubber. Further, the ash suspended in the carbon-soot liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel stream from the bottom of the liquid organic extractant still may be optionally reduced in another solids-liquid separator prior to recycling a portion of said stream to the gas generator as part of the hydrocarbonaceous reactant fuel feed. Abstract: A burner for the partial oxidation of pumpable slurries of solid carbonaceous fuels in which the pumpable slurry of solid carbonaceous fuel in a liquid carrier is passed in liquid phase through one passage of a burner comprising a retracted central coaxial conduit, an outer coaxial conduit with a converging orifice at the downstream tip of the burner and, optionally, an intermediate coaxial conduit. The downstream tips of the central conduit and the intermediate conduit, if any, are retracted upstream from the burner face a distance of respectively two or more say 3 to 10 for the central conduit, and about 0 to 12 say 1 to 5 for the intermediate conduit times the minimum diameter of the converging orifice of the outer conduit at the burner tip. A pre-mix zone is thereby provided comprising one or more, say 2 to 5 coaxial pre-mix chambers in series. The free oxygen-containing stream is passed through a separate passage of the burner into the pre-mix zone, in which mixing takes place with the slurry of solid carbonaceous fuel and liquid carrier. From 0 to 100, say about 2 to 80, volume % of the liquid carrier may be vaporized in the pre-mix zone. The multiphase mixture of reactants is then discharged into the reaction zone of the free-flow partial oxidation gas generator by way of the converging orifice of the outer conduit at the burner tip. Synthesis gas, fuel gas, or reducing gas is thereby produced.

Abstract: This invention relates to an improved procedure and apparatus for treating impure water. A novel water flash column is employed which comprises at least one stripping plate and two bottom chambers separated by a vertical weir. The reclaimed water produced in the subject process is recycled to a raw synthesis gas scrubbing operation where a water-carbon dispersion is produced. This dispersion is resolved by extraction with a liquid organic extractant in a decanting zone, and impure water is separated from a liquid organic extractant-carbon dispersion. The liquid organic extractant-carbon dispersion is then resolved by distillation, and the constituents are separated in a separation vessel. Impure water from said separation vessel and/or said decanting zone is fed into the previously described water flash column. In one embodiment an emulsion is also formed in the separation vessel. This emulsion may be disposed of by recycling it to the decanting zone in admixture with one or both feedstreams. Alternatively, the emulsion may be introduced into the water flash column in admixutre with the impure water from the decanting zone; or the emulsion may be heated and broken into its constituent parts which are then disposed of within the system. - I

Abstract: Continuous prodn. comprises reacting a dispersion of particulate carbon in a liq. fuel with an O2-contg. gas (air, O2-enriched air or O2) in an O/C atomic ratio of 0.6-1.5, at 1300-3000 degrees F and 1-250 atm. in a free-flow unpacked gas generator, opt. in the presence of a temp. moderator comprising H2O, CO2, flue gas or cooled recycle gas. The resulting effluent gas is cooled to 300-900 degrees F (above the dew point of H2O in the gas) and particulate carbon is removed by quenching the gas in a hot immersion fluid comprising a dispersion of particulate carbon in liq. fuel. At least part of the hot immersion fluid is cooled to 300-850 degrees F in a waste-heat boiler and at least partly recycled to the quench zone. Part of the hot or cooled immersion fluid is passed to the gas generator. The process avoids problems associated with emulsion formation and H2O removal from the product gas. By-product steam is obtained from the waste-heat boiler.
