Abstract: GARBAGE AND OTHER INORGANIC AND ORGANIC SOLID WASTE MATTER IS REDUCED TO SMALL SIZE AND MIXED WITH A FLUID SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF H2O, LIQUID HYDROCARBON FUEL, LIQUID HYDROCARBON FUEL-PARTICULATE CARBON SLURRY OR PARTICULATE CARBON-WATER SLURRY PRODUCED SUBSEQUENTLY IN THE PROCESS, AND MIXTURES THEREOF TO PRODUCE A FEED MIXTURE STREAM. THE FEED MIXTURE IS PREFERABLY PREHEATED TO PRODUCE A FEED DISPERSION STREAM COMPRISING BITS OF GARBAGE AND SOLID WASTE MATTER, PARTICULATE CARBON, LIQUID AND VAPORIZED HYDROCARBON FUEL, AND STEAM. BY THE PARTIAL OXIDATION OF THE FEED MIXTURE OR DISPERSION STREAM WITH A STREAM OF OXYGEN-RICH GAS IN THE REACTION ZONE OF A FREE-FLOW UNPACKED NONCATALYTIC SYNTHESIS GAS GENERATOR AT AN AUTOGENOUS TEMPERATURE IN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 1500 TO 3000*F. AND AT A PRESSURE IN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 1 TO 250 ATMOSPHERES, THE GARBAGE AND SOLID WASTE MATTER ARE CONVERTED INTO A STREAM OF SYNTHESIS GAS OR FUEL GAS, AND OTHER VALUABLE BY-PRODUCTS.

Abstract: SEWAGE IS CONVERTED INTO A SUSEFUL NON-POLLUTING PRODUCT GAS, E.G. SYNTHESIS GAS OR FUEL GAS BY DEWATERING MUNICIPAL SANITARY SEWAGE, PRODUCING A THICKENED SLUDGE. THE THICKENED SLUDGE IS MIXED WITH A FLUID SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF H20, LIQUID HYDROCARBON FUEL, PARTICULATE CARBON SLURRIES IN WATER OR IN A LIQUID HYDROCARBON FUEL IS PRODUCED SUBSEQUENTLY IN THE PROCESS, AND MIXTURES THEREOF TO PRODUCE A FEED MIXTURE STREAM. PREFERABLY THE FEED MIXTURE IS HEATED TO A TEMPERATURE IN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 212 TO 600*F. TO VAPORIZE VOLATILE CONSTITUENTS IN THE FEED MIXTURE AND TO PRODUCE A FEED DISPERSION STREAM. THE FEED DISPERSION IS THEN REACTED BY PARTIAL OXIDATION WITH AN OXYGEN-RICH GAS IN AN UNPACKED FREE-FLOW NON-CATALYTIC SYNTHESIS GAS GENERATOR, AT A TEMPERATURE IN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 1500 TO 3000*F. AND AT A PRESSURE IN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 1 TO 250 ATMOSPHERES TO PRODUCE SYNTHESIS GAS. WATER SEPARATED FROM THE SEWAGE IS PURIFIED AND USED FOR INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OR CONVERTED INTO BY-PRODUCT STEAM BY INDIRECT HEAT EXCHANGE WITH THE PRODUCT GAS. IN A SECOND EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION, GARBAGE IS DISPOSED OF BY MIXING BITS OF GARBAGE WITH THICKENED SEWAGE SLUDGE AND THE AFORESAID FLUID THEREBY FORMING A FEED MIXTURE WHICH IS CONVERTED INTO SYNTHESIS GAS BY THE PARTIAL OXIDATION REACTION WITH AN OXYGEN-RICH GAS IN SAID FLOW TYPE GAS GENERATOR.

Abstract: In a process for disposing of sewage, comminuted waste and solid waste and/or conc. and dehydrated sewage and solid waste are mixed with a combustible liq. hydrocarbon, a slurry of such a hydrocarbon with C particles, an aq. slurry of C particles and/or water, as flow-auxiliary, to give a reaction mixt., which is led into a non-packed, non-catalytic free-flow gas generator, where the reaction mixt. is partially oxidised with a gas contg. free O2 and steam, under the normal conditions of the synthesis gas or heating gas reaction, to give a hot gaseous end-prod. contg. H2, CO, CO2, water and C particles. A cheap, continuous process is provided, giving a useful by-prod., e.g. synthesis gas. Discharge of waste into rivers is avoided.

Abstract: TRIM CONTROL FOR PARTIAL OXIDATION GAS GENERATOR (D#73,824-F) Trim control of a partial oxidation gas generator for the production of synthesis gas, reducing gas, or fuel gas is effected by two improved control schemes which are automatically operated separately or in sequence. The control systems include sensors sensing the flow rate of the feedstreams and analyzers which provide signals corresponding to the wt.% carbon in the effluent gas quench cooling and scrubbing water for use in controlling the particulate carbon in the effluent gas stream, and/or signals corresponding to the mole fraction of CH4 (dry basis) in the cooled and cleaned effluent gas stream for use in controlling the temperature in the reaction zone. The signals from the sensors and analyzers are provided to the system control unit which computes values that represent the relative difference between the actual and desired carbon-make and/or the actual temperature in the reaction zone, and the relative difference between the actual and desired temperature in the reaction zone. The actual temperature is determined as a function of the methane concentration. These values are automatically compared with set point values and when adjustments are necessary, signals from the system control unit are provided to a flow rate regulating means which adjusts the flow rate of the free-oxygen containing gas by a small determined amount for control of the particulate carbon and/or to a flow rate regulating means which adjusts the flow rate of the temperature moderator by a small determined amount for control of the temperature in the reaction zone. When the computed adjustment for either stream requires increasing or decreasing the flow rate greater than by a specified amount then no adjustment is made to the flow rate controller but a high or low level alarm is actuated to alert the plant operator. - I

Abstract: Municipal sanitary sewage sludge is disposed of by an improved partial oxidation process without polluting the environment. Aqueous slurries of sewage sludge are upgraded by being sheared without heating, concentrated if necessary, and then mixed with a supplemental fuel, preferably coal. In one embodiment, the aqueous slurry of sewage sludge and the supplemental coal and/or petroleum coke are introduced into a shearing mixer for simultaneous shearing and mixing together. A pumpable aqueous slurry of sewage sludge-coal and/or petroleum coke is thereby produced having an increased amount of total solids and an increased heat content (HHV) as well as containing an increased amount of sewage sludge for reacting with free-oxygen containing gas in a free-flow partial oxidation gas generator. Hot quench water or steam produced by cooling the hot raw effluent stream of synthesis gas, reducing gas or fuel gas from the gasifier may provide heat for indirect heat exchange with other streams in the process.
