    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester excellent in brightness, transparency and processability during molding, by adding Ca and/or Li compounds to an esterification reaction product containing a P compound within a specified residence time. CONSTITUTION:A slurry containing terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol as the principal starting materials at a predetermined molar ratio is fed continuously to the 1st reaction tank 1, esterified to an esterification rate of above 90%, withdrawn by a transfer pump 2 so that the quantity of the solution held in the tank 1 can be kept constant, led to the 2nd reaction tank 3, where it is esterified after the addition of 0.003-0.05wt% P compound, and then transferred to a catalyst addition tank 4. Then, 0.015-0.20wt% glycol-soluble Ca and/or Li salts and a polymerization catalyst are added to the reaction solution within the residence time of the reaction solution of 1.5hr, and the mixture is led to a prepolymerizer 6, where its polycondensation is allowed to advance under a weak vacuum, and polycondensed to completion under a high vacuum in a polymerizer 7.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain polyester useful for fiber having excellent brightness, transparency and yarn-making workability, by a method wherein terephthalic acid is esterified with ethylene glycol and then calcium cpd., cobalt cpd. and phosphorus cpd. are added to the reaction mixt. CONSTITUTION:A dicarboxylic acid consisting mainly of terephthalic acid contg. 4-carboxybenzaldehyde of 100-1000ppm is esterified with a glycol consisting mainly of ethylene glycol until a conversion of no less than 95% to an ester is obtained. Then calcium cpd., cobalt cpd, and phosphorus cpd. in an amount determined by formulae I-IV are added to the reaction mixt. The resulting mixt. is immediately subjected to polycondensation. The most preferred method of the above esterification reaction is that in which a slurry composed of the dicarboxylic acid and the glycol is supplied to yarn, in which 50-150wt% of BHT based on the amount of said dicarboxylic acid consisting mainly of terephthalic acid is present, in order to carry out the esterification in view of diethylene glycol content in the polymer.
