    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a graphitized fiber having high crystallinity of graphite and excellent elastic modulus and strength by producing a carbon fiber by baking at a temperature below a specific level and baking the obtained fiber in a pressurized inert atmosphere at a temperature above a specific level under drawing and twisting. CONSTITUTION:A carbon fiber such as an acrylic carbon fiber produced by baking at =2000 deg.C under twisting while applying elongation of >=5%. The crystallinity of graphite can easily be improved by this process to obtain the objective fiber having excellent elastic modulus, etc. The twist number of the carbon fiber is preferably 2-30turn/m.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To remarkably improve tensile strength of carbon fiber by treating the surface of the aforementioned fiber in the vapor phase in an atmosphere, composed of nitrogen dioxide and an inert gas in a specific proportion with an oxygen content within a specific range and kept at a high temperature. CONSTITUTION:For example, the surface of carbon fiber composed of an acrylic fiber, etc., is treated in the vapor phase in an atmosphere, composed of 5-60vol.%, preferably 10-30vol.% nitrogen dioxide and 40-95vol.% inert gas (preferred example; nitrogen) in an oxygen concentration within the range of =600kg/mm tensile strength. The high strength carbon fiber is suitable for aerospace uses.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent surface defects resulting from bonding between single filaments at an early stage of carbonization and to obtain reinforcing carbon fiber having a few inner voids, high strength and high modules of elasticity by subjecting acrylic yarn to flameproofing treatment and carbonizing the fiber at specific temperature under reduced pressure while drawing. CONSTITUTION:Acrylic fiber is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere to carry out flameproofing treatment and then carbonized at 300-1,000 deg.C preferably 300-550 deg.C under =3%, preferably >=10% to give the aimed fiber.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To raise productivity and to obtain the title fibers in high yield by providing a base material as a cathode with electric charge in an aqueous solution containing metallic ion, supplying the base material with a metallic catalyst and thermally decomposing a hydrocarbon gas by using the base material. CONSTITUTION:A base material such as graphite board or carbon fiber as a cathode is provided with electric charge in an aqueous solution containing ion of metal such as iron or nickel and the base material is supplied with a metallic catalyst. Then the base material is used and a hydrocarbon gas such as methane, benzene or ethane is thermally decomposed by using a hydrogen gas as a carrier gas at 700-1,500 deg.C to give the aimed fibers.
