Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing carbon fibers, capable of preventing the mixing adjacent precursor fibers due to the decrease in the distance among of the precursor fiber strands on a grooved roller for simultane ously sintering the precursor fibers and thereby capable of improving the process ability of the precursor fibers by blowing a gas toward the outside of the grooved roller for the precursor fibers on the feeding side of the grooved roller. SOLUTION: This method for producing carbon fibers contains guiding a plurality of precursor fiber 4 into the grooves of a grooved roller 3. Therein, just before the fibers 4 reach the roller 3, a gas 1 is blown from a pipe 2 for blowing the gas to the outside of the roller 3 in order to prevent the mutual interference of the adjacent fibers. The gas is preferably blown at a velocity of >=0.5m/sec and at a blowing angle of >=10 degree to the fibers. The tensions of the fibers at the gas-blowing positions are preferably 0.05-0.3g/d, and the gas is preferably blown on the fibers just in front of the fiber-guiding positions on the grooved roller.

CONSTITUTION:The objective fiber is produced by using a polymer containing >=60%, preferably >=85mol% of alpha-chloroacrylonitrile unit. Preferably, the single fiber diameter of the precursor fiber is =90% in the direction of fiber axis from the viewpoint of the physical properties of carbon fiber produced by the calcination of the precursor fiber. The flame-resisting treatment of the precursor fiber can be performed at 100-180 deg.C and the thermal carbonization treatment is preferably carried out at >=1,300 deg.C.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the compression strength and torsional modulus of a carbon fiber by using atoms or molecules which are solid or gas at normal temperature, ionizing and accelerating the atoms, etc., with electric field in vacuum, implanting ions having an atomic weight smaller than a specific level to the surface of a carbon fiber and then implanting ions having atomic weight larger than the above level. CONSTITUTION:Atoms or molecules which are solid or gas at normal temperature are ionized in vacuum and accelerated with electric potential. A carbon fiber is implanted from the surface with ions having an atomic weight of =21 such as silicon, argon, titanium or chromium. The vacuum degree in the implantation process is preferably eta10 Torr, especially Torr, the acceleration potential of ion is preferably >=50kV, especially >=150kV and the implantation amount of ion is preferably >=10 (ion)/ cm , especially >=10 /cm .
