Abstract: PURPOSE: To profitably obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals, a raw material for synthesizing liquid crystal materials, etc., in a high conversion, a high yield and a high selectivity by subjecting 4-acetoxybiphenyl to an iodination reaction, a cyanization reaction and subsequently a hydrolysis reaction. CONSTITUTION: A compound, 4-Acetoxybiphenyl of formula I is iodinated with iodine in the presence of an acid catalyst [e.g. sulfuric acid or (heterogeneous poly)phosphoric acid] and nitrogen dioxide, etc., as an oxidizing agent in a solvent such as dichloromethane to obtain 4-acetoxy-4'-iodobiphenyl of formula II. The compound is cyanized with a slightly excessive amount of cuprous cyanide, etc., in an aprotic polar solvent such as DMF and subsequently hydrolyzed in the presence of an alkali hydroxide, etc., in an alcoholic solvent to obtain the objective 4-cyano-4'-hydroxybiphenyl of formula III.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a high ionic conductivity and excellent mechanical properties by mixing an inorg. ionic salt into a polyalkylene glycol-polyvinyl chloride block copolymer. CONSTITUTION:The title compsn. comprises a block copolymer consisting of a polyalkylene glycol block and a polyvinyl chloride block and an inorg. ionic salt, pref. in an amt. of 0.05-50mol% based on alkylene oxide units of the polyalkylene glycol block. The salt pref. contains at least one metal ion selected from the group consisting of ions of Li, Na, K, Cs, Ag, Cu, and Mg. The addition of a polyalkylene glycol of the formula, R'O-(CH2CHRO)n-R'' (wherein R, R', and R'' are each H or lower alkyl; and (n) is an integer of 3-30), or a deriv. thereof to the compsn. can further enhance the ionic conductivity.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a large-screen liquid crystal display device which has inconspicuous join parts by coupling plural liquid crystal display panels where a liquid crystal layer made of polymer dispersed type liquid crystal is sandwiched between substrates. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display panels 1 which are constituted by sandwiching the liquid crystal layer 8 made of polymer dispersed type liquid crystal between two substrates 2 and 6 so that transparent electrodes face each other and have no seal parts at the outer peripheral parts of the substrates are coupled. The polymer dispersed liquid crystal is a gathering of liquid crystal dispersed in a polymer matrix. Nematic liquid crystal, smectic liquid crystal, etc., are used as the liquid crystal. Each liquid crystal display panel 1 is adhered to a protection cover provided on the front surface with an adhesive. In another way, the panels are fixed to transparent housings with an adhesive by utilizing non-display parts between the liquid crystal display panels and the housings are coupled. Thus, the large-screen liquid crystal display device which has inconspicuous join parts is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To eliminate generation of wrinkles, breakage, and holding of bubbles while a battery is fabricated to efficiently manufacture the battery having steady performance by impregnating a separator with a liquefied mixture containing a monomer capable of polymerizing, by stacking the separator on both sides of one electrode plate before polymerization for gelling, and by stacking the other electrode plate thereon, then by winding them. CONSTITUTION:A microporous resin film for separator is impregnated with a liquified mixture which contains a lithium ion and a material capable of polymerizing for gelling. The impregnated resin films are stacked on both sides of one electrode plate, then the material is polymerized for gelling. Since the surface of the resin film is sticky, adhesion between the electrode plate and the separator film is increased and troubles such as generation of wrinkles in the microporous resin film in wrapping process are decreased compared with use of the conventional microporous film having no gelled material. Since the liquified mixture is impregnated before polymerization, it is easily penetrated into the separator, inside pores are decreased, and internal resistance is also decreased.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as a synthetic raw material of pharmaceuticals, etc. in high yield, by iodinating diphenyl ether, subjecting to the ammonolysis, and decomposing the by-produced ammonium iodide with nitrogen dioxide thereby quantitatively recovering iodine. CONSTITUTION:The objective 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether of formula III can be produced by the ammonolysis of 4,4'-diiododiphenyl ether produced by the reaction of diphenyl ether of formula I with iodine in the presence of nitrogen dioxide. The by-produced ammonium iodide is decomposed with nitrogen dioxide to recover iodine. The iodination reaction proceeds easily at room temperature - 150 deg.C, and the reaction temperature is preferably 40-90 deg.C. The amount of nitrogen dioxide is >=1mol, preferably 1.5-2.5mol per 1mol of iodine. Iodine can be nearly quantitatively recovered and reused by the iodine recovering process.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound economically and advantageously in high selectivity, by reacting an aromatic iodine compound with nitrogen dioxide under mild conditions. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic iodine compound, e.g. mono- and diiodinated compound of an alkylbenzene, is reacted with nitrogen dioxide in a solvent, e.g. acetic acid or dichloromethane, at -10-+100 deg.C, preferably 0-60 deg.C to substitute the iodine ions with the nitrogen dioxide ions and give the aimed substance in the manner of position selectivity. The nitrogen dioxide to be used as an oxidizing agent may be accompanied by nitrogen and air, etc. and continuously fed to the reaction system or dissolved in a reaction solvent and dropped with time. The molar amount of the nitrogen dioxide to be used is 2-100 times, preferably 5-50 times of that of the aromatic iodine compound.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce an aromatic iodine compound convertible to fine chemicals, economically, in high yield and selectivity, by reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon with I2 in a solvent using nitrogen dioxide as an inexpensive and easily handleable oxidation agent. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydrocarbon such as diphenyl ether, acetanilide, 1,2-methylenedioxybenzene, benzofuran, o-xylene, etc. is made to react with I2 in a solvent such as dichloromethane preferably at 10-150 deg.C introducing nitrogen dioxide optionally carried by an inert gas such as N2 gas, etc. into the system to obtain the objective compound such as 4,4'-diiododiphenyl ether, 4-iodo-acetanilide, etc. EFFECT:The nitrogen monoxide produced by the reaction is oxidized with air to nitrogen dioxide, and reused for the reaction. The separation and purification of the product can be carried out easily because of high selectivity. The reaction condition is extremely mild, and there is little danger of the corrosion of the apparatus, etc.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare a solution of a polyamic acid having a controlled MW, by polymerizing biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride with an aromatic diamine in a specified mixed solvent. CONSTITUTION:To a mixed solvent consisting of 100pts.wt. dimethylformamide or N-methylpyrrolidone and 5-70pts.wt. lower alcohol, e.g., methyl alcohol, are added a substantially equimolar amount of biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and an aromatic diamine of formula I or II, wherein R1 and R2 are each a substituent such as H or a lower alkyl, and A is a bivalent group such as -O- or -S-. The resulting mixture is polymerized at 100 deg.C or below for 0.5-20hr to obtain a solution of polyamic acid containing at least 80% recurring units of formula III, wherein R is a bivalent aromatic residue derived by removing the amino groups from the aromatic diamine. EFFECT:It is possible to control arbitrarily the logarithmic viscosity of the polymer in the polyamic acid solution in the range of 0.5-5.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title film having improved heat resistance and mechanical strength by forming a liquid thin film of a resin composition prepared from an aromatic polyimide resin dissolved into a halogenated phenol compounds and then evaporating to remove the solvent from the liquid film. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic polyimide resin having more than 90% of repeating unit as polymer main chain of the formula I (R1 is a radical removed amino group from aromatic diamine of the general formula H2N-R1-NH2) is dissolved into molten halogenated phenol of formula II or III (R2 are H, C1-3 alkyl; X is halogen) having less than 100 deg.C of melting point and less than 300 deg.C of boiling point to prepare a polyimide resin composition and forming a liquid thin film from the polyimide resin composition, then after, evaporating to remove the halogenated phenol from the liquid film at 50-300 deg.C under normal or reduced pressure, thereby the title polyimide film is obtained.
