Abstract: Provision is made in electronic document processing systems for printing complete or partial, compressed or uncompressed machine readable digital representations of electronic source documents and human readable renderings of such source documents on the same recording media through the use of the same printing system. This integration of human readable renderings with machine readable representations of the electronic source documents upon which the renderings are based increases the precision of the information transfer that occurs when information is being transferred from the hardcopy domain to the electronic domain.

Abstract: Microaddressable printers and other types of display systems are provided for rendering two dimensional images on high gamma, photosensitive recording media. These systems are microaddressable because they are operated in an overscanned mode to render images by scanning one or more intensity modulated scan spots over a high gamma, photosensitive recording medium in accordance with a scan pattern that causes the spot or spots to superimpose multiple discrete exposures on the recording medium on centers that are separated by a pitch distance that is significantly less than the effective spatial diameter of the scan spot or spots (e. g., the full width/half max. diameter of a gaussian scan spot). Overscanned systems have substantially linear addressability responses, so boundary scans that are intensity modulated in accordance with preselected offset values are used by these systems for spatially positioning the transitions that are contained by the images they render to a sub-pitch precision.

Abstract: A self-clocking glyph code (31) is composed of data glyphs (34) which encode logically ordered data values, together with one or more multi-glyph synchronization code patterns (33). Each of the synchronization code patterns (33) is distinguishable from the data glyphs (34), but the synchronization code pattern (33) or patterns provide an explicit spatial reference for the data glyphs. To this end, the glyphs (37) of the synchronization code pattern (33) or patterns are written on the recording medium (35) in accordance with the same spatial formatting rule as the data glyphs (34), plus at least one additional formatting rule that establishes a predetermined geometric relationship between the glyphs of the synchronization code pattern or patterns (33) and corresponding ones of the spatially formatted data glyphs (34), such that the logical order of at least a significant number (>> 1)of the data glyphs (34) is inferable from the synchronization code pattern or patterns (33). Preferably, each of the synchronization code patterns (33) is composed of glyphs (37) that are selected from the same finite symbol set as the data glyphs (34), so the synchronization code pattern or patterns (33) typically are defined by glyph patterns that have a suitably high statistical probability of being unique with respect to any pattern of data glyphs.

Abstract: This invention provides self-clocking glyph shape codes for encoding digital data in the shapes of glyphs that are suitable for printing on hardcopy recording media. Advantageously, the glyphs are selected so that they tend not to degrade into each other when they are degraded and/or distorted as a result, for example, of being photocopied, transmitted via facsimile, and/or scanned-in to an electronic document processing system. Moreover, for at least some applications, the glyphs desirably are composed of printed pixel patterns containing nearly the same number of ON pixels and nearly the same number of OFF pixels, such that the code that is rendered by printing such glyphs on substantially uniformly spaced centers appears to have a generally uniform texture. In the case of codes printed at higher spatial densities, this texture is likely to be perceived as a generally uniform gray tone. Binary image processing and convolution filtering techniques for decoding such codes also are diclosed, but this application focuses on the codes.

Abstract: Provision is made in electronic document processing systems for printing unfiltered or filtered machine-readable digital representations of electronic documents, and human-readable renderings of them on the same record medium using the same printing process. The integration of machine-readable digital representations of electronic documents with the human-readable hardcopy renderings of them may be employed, for example, not only to enhance the precision with which the structure and content of such electronic documents can be recovered by scanning such hardcopies into electronic document processing systems, but also as a mechanism for enabling recipients of scanned-in versions of such documents to identify and process annotations that were added to the hardcopies after they were printed and/or for alerting the recipients of the scanned-in documents to alterations that may have been made to the original human-readable content of the hardcopy renderings. In addition to storage of the electronic representation of the document, provision is made for encoding information about the electronic representation of the document itself, such as file name, creation and modification dates, access and security information, printing histories. Provision is also made for encoding information which is computed from the content of the document and other information, for purposes of authentication and verification of document integrity. Provision is also made for the encoding of information which relates to operations which are to be performed depending on handwritten marks made upon a hardcopy rendering of the document; for example, encoding instructions of what action is to be taken when a box on a document is checked. Provision is also made for encoding in the hardcopy another class of information: information about the rendering of the document specific to that hard copy, which can include a numbered copy of that print, the identification of the machine which performed that print, the reproduction characteristics of the printer, the screen frequency and rotation used by the printer in rendering halftones. Provision is also made for encoding information about the digital encoding mechanism itself, such as information given in standard-encoded headers about subsequently compressed or encrypted digital information.

Abstract: A user interface is implemented using visual indicia and a background for the visual indicia that encodes address information. The background appears visually as a stipple pattern, but is implemented using glyphs which form and address carpet that encodes address information uniquely identifying each area of the user interface. An image capture device is used to select an area of the address carpet that is under or near visual indicia of interest to the user. The image capture device captures the area of interest, and transmits the image area to a computer for processing. The computer first determines the proper orientation of the image, and then decodes the information encoded by the glyphs. The decoding results in an X, Y address identifying the location of the selected area in the address carpet. Based on the address, the computer may perform an operation associated with the area.

Abstract: Apparatus, methods and articles of manufacture consistent with the present invention, provide a registration scheme wherein a first set of information on a substrate having embedded data embodied thereon is registered with a second set of information, based on the embedded data. In accordance with this registration scheme, an image capture device (470) captures an image that includes embedded code and causes a display to be created that includes a combination of the captured image and information that augments the image with additional information. The additional information is registered with the captured image in the combined display.
