    Abstract: A process for preparing benzoic acid by oxidizing toluene with a molecular oxygen containing gas in the liquid phase, which is characterized in that the oxidation is performed in the substantial absence of lower fatty acids and/or halogen compounds, and in the presence of a catalyst composed of component A which is a nickel compound, and component B which is a manganese compound, the total amount of nickel metal and manganese metal ranging from 0.003 to 0.5% by weight based on the total oxidation reaction mixture, and the weight ratio of the nickel metal to the manganese metal being from 99.8/0.2 to 60/40, when the oxidation is performed at a temperature between 135 DEG C. and 185 DEG C., and from 99.8/0.2 to 5/95 when the oxidation is performed at a temperature between 185 DEG and 235 DEG C.

    Abstract: 1420871 Curing catalyst AEROJET-GENERAL CORP 15 Jan 1973 [14 Jan 1972] 1974/ 73 Heading B1E [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A curable oxirane-imide composition (see Division C3) contains a catalyst composition which comprises a chromium III tricarboxylate having active unoccupied coordination sites, but which sites are occupied in the composition by benzoate; a trinaphenate. The organic liquid which is unreactive to the oxirane and the imide. The composition is cured by removing the organic liquid, e.g. by heating, and thus freeing the active coordination sites on the chromium salt. Suitably, the composition comprises the oxirane, imide and chromium salt all dissolved in the organic liquid. The chromium salt may be the trihexanoate; tripentanoate; tributyrate; tri-(2-ethylhexanoate); tridecanoate: trioleate; tri-(2-octanoate); tritoluate; tribenzoate; a trialkylbenzoate or trialkoxybenzoate; a trinaphenate. The organic liquid may be N, N-dimethylformamide; tetrahydrofuran; methanol; ethanol; dioxan; dimethylsulphoxide; dimethylsulpholane; tetramethyl; urea; N, N-dimethyl acetamide; N-methylcaprolactam; N-methylpyrrolidone; nitroalkanes, e.g. nitroethane; or nitroaromatics, e.g. nitrotoluene or nitrobenzene.

    Abstract: A process is provided for the preparation of aryl ketones by catalytic decomposition of tertiary hydroperoxides, in particular for the preparation of acetophenone from cumene hydroperoxide, said process comprising effecting the catalytic decomposition of a tertiary hydroperoxide of the formula: in which Ar represents a monovalent aromatic radical, the free valency of which is carried by a carbon atom belonging to an aromatic ring, and R1 and R2, which may be identical or different, each represents a monovalent aliphatic radical or R1 and R2 together form a divalent aliphatic radical, in a reaction medium comprising water, an inorganic or organic derivative of copper and a phenol, and at a temperature of from 50 DEG C to 150 DEG C.
