Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - Ultra-violet rays for sterilizing or promoting chemical and physical actions in liquid and solid substances are produced by vapour electric apparatus in which the vaporizable cathode consists of thallium, caesium, or equivalent solid metal or alloy; the discharge then produces considerable quantities of extreme ultra-violet rays. The discharge is started by heating the apparatus so as to melt the cathode, or by applying a momentary high electric pressure.

Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.- Thorium oxide is dissolved or suspended in the mercury in a vapour rectifier, say in the proportion of 3 parts of thoria to 100,000 of mercury. The arc is thus rendered more steady and reduced in temperature, enabling choking-coils to be dispensed with and cheaper glass to be used in the construction of the device. A heating- filament may be used, as described in Specification 257,597.
