    Abstract: PURPOSE:To facilitate the manufacture of DC type PDP(DC type gas discharge indication panel) having low operating voltage and power consumption, by forming a comlex metal oxide such as the oxide of alkali earth metal element on a cathode basic metal as a porous adhesion layer. CONSTITUTION:An oxide or sulfide or complex metal oxide 2 with aluminum of an electrically insulative alkali earth element having low work function and high melting point is formed as a porous adhesion layer 2' on a DC type PDP cathode basic metal 1 through such as plasma ejection. Consequently a DC type PDP having low operating voltage and power consumption can be easily manufactured without requiring the high temperature heating process when compared with conventional one.

    Abstract: A bidirectional gas discharge tube (GDT) includes a discharge chamber, first and second cathodes, a gas disposed within the discharge chamber, and a control grid. The first and second cathodes are disposed within the discharge chamber and include first and second faces, respectively. The first face and the second face are plane-parallel. The gas is configured to insulate the first cathode from the second cathode. The control grid is disposed between the first and second cathodes within the discharge chamber. The control grid is configured to generate an electric field to initiate establishment of a conductive plasma between the first and second cathodes to close a conduction path extending between the first and second cathodes.

[Class 39 (i)] In a mercury-arc discharge'tube of the kind in which an igniter electrode dips into the cathode pool and particularly of the kind described in Specification 608,589, the mercury pool includes as an admixture a material of low work-function such as sodium, barium, potassium or caesium to reduce the ignition potential. Preferably, sodium metal is used and added to the mercury as a few parts in a million. The admixture material prepared in a vessel in communication with the tube is absorbed by running the mercury into the vessel and then returning it to the main tube which is then sealed off.
