Abstract: 24,684. Stewart, W. C. Nov. 20,1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Nailing.-A work-support, particularly for use in connexion with loose-nailers, sluggers, and protector-drivers, is constructed so that its free end may be moved universally in a single plane, while normally it is held in such a position relatively to the machine head that the jacking &c. of the work is facilitated. The invention is described with reference to that type of support in which the jackpost 20 is carried by a bracket 3 secured to the vertically-movable jack spindle 2. The jack-post 20 is provided at its lower end with a gimbal joint, which is in two sections connected by a pivot-pin 23, while the upper section is secured to the jackpost by a pivot pin 22 at right angles to the first pin. The curved faces of the two sections limit the movements of the post. An adjustable spring 25 normally holds the jack-post in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. The lower end of the jackpost is mounted on a collar 8 secured to a pin 5, which passes freely through a collar 6 and a table 4 formed on the lower end of the bracket 3. The collars 6, 8 have complementary cam-surfaces 7, 9, which are held in contact with each other by a spring 10. To adjust the height of the jack-post and to lock it in its adjusted position, there is provided a handle 13 having a pair of depending hook-shaped lugs 14, Figs. 2 and 4, at its inner end. This handle is pivoted about a screw 12, which engages a lug 6 extending from the collar 6. The lugs 14 project past and overlie a bar 15 extending laterally from a pin 16, which is located in a recess in the collar 6. This bar is provided with a wedgefaced dog 18, which is held in engagement with ratchet teeth 4 on the periphery of the table 4 by a spring-pressed plug 19 mounted on the handle 13. If the handle is moved transversely in either direction, one of the lugs 14 engages the bar 15 and moves it so that the dog 18 is withdrawn from engagement with the ratchet teeth 4 ; further movement of the handle rotates the collar 6, and thereby raises or lowers the collar 8 and the jack-post.

Abstract: 5560. Stewart, W. J. Oct. 7. Railways and tramways, electric ; railways and tramways, rope. - In electric or cable railways or tramways in which a conduit is used, the rail points and the conduit-slot guides for the plough or cable grip are arranged to be operated from the vehicle mechanically by a plunger entering the conduit slot or by the plough or cable grip itself. The invention is in part a development of that described in Specification No. 19,657, A.D. 1903. The rail points 6, 13, Fig. 1, are connected together and to the conduit-slot guides 12 by levers arranged as shown in Fig. 4, and one of the rail points 6 has fixed to it a rod 4, Fig. 1, working in guides 5 and adapted to be actuated by a lever 2 which normally projects into the conduit slot and is pushed aside by a plunger 22 carried by the vehicle. The parts are locked in the position into which they are moved by the plunger by the engagement of a spring- or weight-operated bolt 17, Fig. 4, with one of the slot guides 12. When the vehicle has passed the points,. the plunger 22 acts on a trigger 19, Fig. 1, and releases the bolt 17 so that the parts can resume their normal position under the influence of a weight 24, Fig. 4, and a spring 7, Fig. 1. This locking-mechanism may be dispensed with, the lever 2 being extended as shown at 36, Fig. 1, to keep the points open until all the wheels of the car have passed. The plunger 22 is mounted in a frame 27, Fig. 5, on the vehicle in such a manner that it can slide laterally to adapt itself to different positions of the conduit slot, and the frame 27 is pivoted at 25 so that the frame and plunger can be lifted by means of a cord 26 to remove the plunger from the conduit slot. The plunger may also be mounted to slide vertically and be arranged to be lifted and lowered automatically by the engagement of inclined ledges at the side of the conduit slot with a lateral projection on the plunger, which is held in its raised position by a gravity catch 38. In order to make room for the insertion or withdrawal of the plunger, automatically-operated hatches 28, Fig. 8, are arranged at suitable points of the track and are arranged to be opened by the passage of the vehicle wheels over tread pieces 34 mounted in the rail groove and connected to the hatches by levers 31 and cords 30. The inclined ledges for lifting the plunger may be continued on the undersides of the hatches. The plough in an electric railway or the cable grip in a cable railway may serve as the plunger, the plough being made with deep shoes to allow vertical adjustment without separation from the conductors.

Abstract: 19,300. Longworth, W., and Stewart, W. J. Aug. 28. Heckling-machines.-Relates to the transferring- devices of heckling-machines two of which are arranged side by side, and in which the holders are automatically clamped and unclamped and transferred from a main channel to a cross channel, and vice versa, by turntables such as are described in Specifications No. 17,437, A.D. 1899, and No. 16,010, A.D. 1901, and consists chiefly in pivotally mounting the turntables on a stationary part of the framework instead of upon the ends of the rising and falling main channels. The turntable C, Figs. 2 and 4, is mounted on a spindle c supported in bearings c in a bracket c which is rotatably mounted on a stud c carried by a part of the framework B. The turntable receives a holder a from the rising and falling main channel a, which then rises and swings the turntable through a quadrant by means of a connecting-link D, lever d, and bevel-gearing d', so that it comes opposite to the cross channel. By means of a bevel-wheel c keyed to the fixed stud c and a bevelwheel c on the turntable spindle c, a second quadrantal movement is given to the turntable, so that when it comes opposite to the cross channel it has turned the holder from a vertical plane into an horizontal plane. In machines such as are described in Specification No. 17,437, A.D. 1899, this secondary movement is not required and the turntable is bolted to the . bracket c . A safety-clutch device is provided between the lever d and the bevel-gearing d by loosely mounting the lever upon the bevel-wheel spindle d , to which it is connected by the engagement of a V-projection on the lever with a corresponding groove in a spring-pressed disk E, which engages with a key on the bevel-wheel spindle. In a modification, the link D, lever d, and bevel-gearing d are replaced by a bridle-rod connected to the main channel and actuating the turntable bracket by means of a crank on the bracket. In another modification the turntable H, Fig. 10, is fixed to a sector-shaped shoe h mounted to slide in a circular guide h carried by a bracket h pivoted on a spindle h . The stud has an upwardly-projecting twisted strip k engaging with a pair of rollers l carried by a bracket on the main channel a, so that as the channel rises and falls the rollers acting on the twisted strip turn it and the turntable through a quadrant and bring the turntable opposite the cross channel b. By means of a bridle-rod M attached to the shoe h, the secondary quadrantal movement is given to the turntable. A device for transferring the holders from the main channel to the cross channel is shown in Fig. 12. A lever N mounted on a fixed stud n is coupled to the ordinary catch-bar for moving the holder along the cross channel, so that the lever is operated by the catch-bar and moves the holders from the turntable into the cross channel. The lever N also controls another lever n by means of a roller device n , the lever n having a spring catch n adapted to move the holders a' out of the main channel a into the turntable. A device for transferring the holders from the turntable to the main channel has a bell-crank lever o, Fig. 14, pivoted in a fixed bracket o actuated by the catch-bar lever P and adapted to engage with a snug a on the holder a .

Abstract: 19,104. Stewart, J. B. M., and Stewart, W. R. Sept. 4. Fastenings for doors.-A means is provided for opening, from the outside, by means of a key without the use of a coin. Fig. 1 shows a back view of the upper part of one form, the lower part being used as a coin receptacle. A case 1 carries an internal plate 3 spaced from one face by blocks to hold the mechanism in position. The sides 15,16 of a coinshoot lead from the front and are arranged over the vertical slotted end 12, 13 of a bolt 10. The bolt 10 is operated by the knob spindle 20 and lever 18 from the outside only. The bolt 11, forming the latch bolt, is operated, from the inside, by knob spindle 31 and lever 29. The bolt 11 also carries a shoot slot formed by sides 24, 25, and is arranged so that in the shot position a stud 43 acts to retain the coin. Guard-plates 14, 26 on the bolts prevent the insertion of a coin when the bolts have been moved. An inserted coin acts to connect the two bolts so that they can be operated simultaneously. The slide 13 of the shoot on the bolt 10 is cut away so that on the release of the bolt 10 the coin can be discharged. An ordinary slide bolt 32, carrying an "engaged" " or " vacant " indicator, is mounted below the spindle 31, and is constructed to be withdrawn by a key inserted from the front through a keyhole 45 ; further motion of the key acting on the cam 46 can also withdraw the bolt 11. Bolts 10,11 are held forward by springs 21, 27. In a modified form the fixed shoot is omitted, and a vertically sliding frame plate, operated by a turn handle, is substituted for the sliding bolt. The frame plate can engage with a stud on the latch bolt, and is so constructed that the plate and latch bolt can be released by a key. The Provisional Specification describes a form of shoot in which the latch bolt has a vertical stud at the upper end of which is a lip instead of a slot.
