Abstract:
A method for activating two-dimensional host materials for a multivalent/polyatomic ion battery may include adding a pillaring salt in electrolyte. This process may be followed by in-situ electrochemically intercalating the pillaring ions, solvent molecules and multivalent ions into the van der Waals gap of host materials. After the activation process, the host material is transformed into an interlayer-expanded 2D material with significantly enhanced specific capacity and rate performance for multivalent ion intercalation.
Abstract:
A scour monitoring system may provide a housing that is separated into multiple segments that are fluidically isolated from each other. The scour monitoring system may be position adjacent to a structure to be monitored for bridge scouring. Each of the segments may provide a water- swellable material positioned near or in contact with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) cable. If water penetrates a segment, the water- swellable material may expand to deform the FBG cable. The wavelength of the FBG cable may be monitored periodically for changes, thereby providing moisture detection when a change in wavelength is detected.
Abstract:
Systems and methods of manufacturing thermoelectric devices comprising at least one electrical contact fabricated using hot-pressing to increase the bonding strength at the contact interface(s) and reducing the contact resistance. The hot pressed component may include a first and a second metallic layer each in contact with a thermoelectric layer, and where a contact resistance between the first metallic layer and the thermoelectric layer or between the second metallic layer and the thermoelectric layer is less than about 10 μΩ cm 2 . When interlayers are employed in a thermoelectric device, first hot pressed contact interface is formed between the thermoelectric layer and the first interlayer and a second hot pressed contact interface is formed between the thermoelectric layer and the second interlayer, and at least one of the first and the second hot pressed contact interfaces comprises a bonding strength of at least 16 MPa.
Abstract:
A superconductor tape can be fabricated via MOCVD to achieve peel strengths greater than approximately 4.5 N/cm. The superconductor tape can be fabricated via MOCVD with a REBCO composition that includes the elements Samarium (Sm)-Barium(Ba)-Copper(Cu)-Oxygen(O). Varying levels of Copper (Cu) content can achieve peel strengths ranging between approximately 4.5 N/cm to 8.0 N/cm.
Abstract:
Systems and methods of fabricating electrodes, including thin metallic films, include depositing a first metallic layer on a substrate and passivating the deposited layer. The processes of deposition and passivation may be done sequentially. In some embodiments, a plurality of substrates may be coated with a metallic layer and further processed at a later time, including passivation and disposal of additional layers as discussed herein.
Abstract:
Electrochemical devices including solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) or thin film solid oxide fuel cells (TFSOFCs) having a porous metallic anode with nanoporous surface structure enabling the deposition of a dense, impermeable thin film electrolyte layer on the porous anode. Fabricating methods include forming a mixture of nanopowder metallic agents and nanopowder proppant that are sintered, smoothed and etched to form the nanoporous surface structure.
Abstract:
Systems and methods discussed herein relate to Pb-Se based thermoelectric materials for use in thermoelectric applications, the thermoelectric materials may comprise one or more dopants and are ball-milled into a powder and hot-pressed to form pressed components. The pressed components comprise improved room temperature properties, including a ZT above about 0.5 from about 300 K to about 780 K, which leads to improved device efficiency and overall function.
Abstract:
A process of fabricating the composition coating may include selecting a textile material substrate, utilizing a sol-gel comprising a silane or silane derivative and metal oxide precursor to coat the substrate, and optionally coating the substrate with a hydrophobic chemical agent and/or other chemical agents to create a surface with nanoscopic or microscopic features. The process may utilize an all solution process or controlled environment for fabricating a composition coating that prevent wetting or staining of a substrate. The composition coatings for treating textile materials improve soil-resistance and stain-resistance of the textile materials. The composition coatings and their use for treating textile materials can also impart water repellency, oil repellency, ease of cleaning stains and removing particulates. In addition, the composite solution may impart additional properties such as physical strength to the textile whilst retaining the original appearance.
