The present invention relates to a method for controlling the carotenoid amount of plants using the control of the expression of PAP8 (Plastid lipid-associated protein-8) genes. More specifically, the PAP-8 genes, especially PAP8A and PAP8B genes are confirmed to be existed in chlorophyll of the plants, have a function related to the synthesis and accumulation of carotenoid, have a function of controlling the carotenoid amount of the plants through the increase or control of the expression of the PAP-8 genes in a plant body. By using the expression control of genes which shows homogeny in the PAP-8 genes, and a base sequence and a protein sequence thereof, the carotenoid production in various kinds of plant bodies can be improved.
