Abstract:
An apparatus (10) for inflating a vehicular inflatable device incorporates a porous piston (16) that is used to compress a stored pressurised oxidant or oxidant and inert gas mixture (24), while simultaneously introducing a hot, atomised liquid fuel into the gas mixture. The liquid fuel (18) stored in the piston is completely isolated from the oxidant gas, eliminating long-term storage concerns. The combination of elevated pressure and temperature in the stored gas chamber results in immediate and complete combustion of the liquid fuel, accompanied by a dramatic increase in stored gas pressure. A rupture disc (46) and diffuser arrangement (26, 48) is used to control the flow of gases from the stored chamber into the vehicular inflatable device. The apparatus incorporates common fuels and oxidants, and does not produce any particulate matter. By proper selection of the various parameters related to the piston structure and the properties of the stored gas, the performance of the apparatus can be tailored to meet specific requirements. Potentially, the gas mixture may be stored at relatively low pressures.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for autoignition operation of a fluid fuelled inflator (210) used in inflating a vehicle occupant restraint. The inflator device in addition to a fluid fuel (287) free of combustion oxidant and an oxidant also contains stored pressurised gas (214).
Abstract:

Abstract:
An inflator apparatus (10) and method for inflating an inflatable device which rely on the formation and subsequent reaction of acetylene are provided.
Abstract:
An improved adaptive output inflator (210) is provided wherein inflator performance, such as measured by inflator gas output, can be appropriately varied and selected by appropriately varying and selecting the operational oxident composition of the inflator (210).
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods for inflating an inflatable device (10) which are based on the reaction of a carborane fuel material and an oxidant, such as water. Thus, the invention (10) can desirably avoid the need for the storage of reactants under relatively high pressure.
