Abstract: Prodn. of 3,5-dichloroanthranilic acid (I) comprises treating anthranilic acid (II) with HCl and H2O2 in the presence of water. Pref, 2-7, best 4-5.5 moles HCl, and 2-3, best 2.3-2.5 moles H2O2 are used per mole (II) and reaction is at 30-80, esp. 50-60 degrees C. Water is 200-1000, esp. 300-700 wt.% based on (II). (I) is a starting material for dyes and pesticides, e.g. diazotisation and treatment with alcohol gives 3,5-dichlorobenzoic acid. Provides simple and economical process (esp. no organic solvent is needed) giving higher yields of better purity than known methods.

Abstract: Phthalamate and/or alkaline phthalimide are reacted with aqs. hypohalogenites by (1) performing the first reaction stage, i.e. conversion to an alkaline salt of phenyl isocyanato 2-carboxylic acid under adiabatic conditions, (2) immediately transferring the reaction mixture to a final reaction stage avoiding back mixing in stage (1). A reducer (hypohalogenite) may be added to the reaction mixture after (1) before (2). The product is produced more cheaply and simply than by known processes, and with higher yield and purity by eliminating the cooling at stage (1).
