Abstract: Indoles or carbazoles hydrogenated in the nucleus are prepared by electrochemical reduction. Indoles or tetrahydrocarbazoles are electrolysed in aqueous sulphuric acid. The catholyte containing the reaction product is circulated and passed from the electrolytic cell into a column and from the bottom of the column back into the cell. A packed column and flow densities of 1-20 A/dm are preferably used. The catholyte expediently contains 50-70 % by weight strength sulphuric acid. The process products can be used as useful intermediates for dyestuff production.

Abstract: 1,264,150. Formylmethylene-isoindolinones. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 8 July, 1969 [9 July, 1968], No. 34398/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division D1] The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are each an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic radical, or R 2 may be H or alkoxy (excepting the compound where R 1 =Me and R 2 =H), and a process for making them by reacting the corresponding R 2 -substituted-N-R 1 -o-acetylbenzamide with the reaction product of R 3 R 4 NCHO (where R 3 , R 4 are each an aliphatic or aromatic radical or NR 3 R 4 forms a heterocyclic ring) and an acid halide capable of replacing OH in organic compounds by halogen, in presence of an organic solvent, followed by hydrolysis.
