    Abstract: A magnetic head positioning device for multi-track tape recorders consisting essentially of a pivotally mounted head carrier which pivots in a plane at right angles to the plane of the tape. In every position of the head carrier, the head is substantially at right angles to the surface of the tape to be scanned, and the distance between the head and the pivotal axis of the carrier is many times greater than the width of the magnetic tape. In one embodiment, the head carrier is in the form of a lever having an offset portion and is pivotally mounted opposite the capstan. In another embodiment a straight lever is provided which is pivotally mounted on the capstan side of the recorder. In a further embodiment of the invention, the end of the lever which carries the magnetic head can be pivoted in a slot in a tape guide in a plane substantially at right angles to the guide surface. The device is used preferentially for transports for very flexible tapes and extremely high track densities.

    Abstract: Trimethyl-p-benzoquinone of the formula I (I) is prepared by a process wherein A. 2,5,6-trimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-one or 2,3,6-trimethyl-cyclohex-2-en-1-one is reacted with air or oxygen at from 0 to 150.degree.C in a virtually anhydrous low molecular weight alkanol in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper (I) oxide or copper(II) oxide and in the presence of from 1 to 10 moles of a hydrogen halide gas per mole of trimethylcyclohexenone, and thereafter B. the reaction mixture, which essentially contains 2,3,6-trimethylphenol and/or 4-halo-2,3,6-trimethylphenol, is mixed with an alkali metal alcoholate in an amount such that a sample, when moistened with water, has a pH of from 3 to 6, and is then reacted with air, pure oxygen or tert.-butyl hydroperoxide at from 0 to 150.degree.C, or wherein from 1 to 10 mole equivalents of a hydrogen halide gas per mole of substrate to be reacted are passed into a mixture containing a virtually anhydrous low molecular weight alkanol and a catalytic amount of copper(I) oxide or copper(II) oxide at from 0 to 30.degree.C, an alkali metal alcoholate is addled in an amount such that a sample, when moistened with water, has a pH of from 3 to 6, about one mole equivalent of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol is added and the mixture is then reacted with air, oxygen or tert.-butyl peroxide at from 0 to 150.degree.. Trimethyl-p-benzoquinone is an important intermediate for the synthesis of vitamin E.

    Abstract: O.Z. 32,364/542 3-Halosulfonylthiophene-carboxylic acid compounds are manufactured by reacting 3-ketothiophane-carb-oxylic acid compounds with sulfonic acid compounds, reacting the end product from the 1st reaction stage with alkali metal polysulfides, reacting the end product from the 2nd stage with a dehydrogenating agent and finally reacting the end product from the 3rd stage with halogen and water. The products are starting compounds for the manufacture of drugs, dyes and crop protection agents and have an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-rheumatic action. In particular, the end products I are starting materials for the manufacture of sweeteners which are non-toxic and free from an after-taste, flavor-improving agents, diabetic aids and feedstuffs, and provide the means of a simple and economical synthesis of thiophene-saccharins.
