At least one solid electrolyte tube arranged concentrically in the tube and oriented with openings towards one end of the tube such that a first annular gap for conducting a liquid alkali metal, which forms an anode, is present between the inside of the tube and the outside of the solid electrolyte tube.     Abstract: A solid polycrystalline potassium ion conductor having a .beta."-Al2O3 structure is obtain- able by means of ion exchange of the alkali metal ions of a polycrystalline alkali metal .beta."-Al2O3 moulding, in which the alkali metal ions are sodium ions or a mixture of sodium and potassium ions and the molar ratio M2O (M = alkali metal) to Al2O 3 is 1 : x, x being an integer or non-integer number within the range 5 to 11, for potassi um ions, the ion exchange being effected by a method wherein neither chloride-containing nor liquid potassium ion sources are used, the method comprising the steps of: embedding the polycrystalline alkali metal .beta."-Al2O3 moulding in an oxid ic powder containing potassium and aluminium of a molar K2O : Al2O3 ratio within the range of 1 : (x- 1) to 1 : (x+1), the weight of oxidic powder amounting to at least two times the weight of the moulding; heating the embedded moulding at a rate of at least 100.degree.C per hour to at least 1100.degree.C; and further heating to at least 1300.degree.C, this temperature being maintained for at least one hour prior to cooling. Potassium metal is obtained, starting from potassium amalgam, by electrolysi s using an anode containing potassium amalgam, liquid potassium metal as a cathode a nd this solid potassium ion conductor as a membrane separating cathode and anode spaces.

    Abstract: Lithium production from aqueous solution, by lithium amalgam formation and use as a moving anode in an electrolysis cell, is new. Metallic lithium is produced from an aqueous lithium salt solution by forming a lithium amalgam from the solution and using amalgam as a moving anode in an electrolysis cell containing a lithium ion conductive solid electrolyte and a molten lithium cathode. Preferred Features: The lithium amalgam anode is moved by stirring and/or pumping under atmospheric or slightly elevate pressure. The amalgam is produced by chlor-alkali electrolysis.
