Abstract: Ziegler-Natta type catalyst system (ZNC), containing (a) a titanium-based solid component containing compounds of Ti and magnesium, a halogen, an inorganic oxide support (IOS) and a carboxylate ester as electron donor, (b) an aluminium compound and (c) optionally another electron donor, in which the oxide (IOS) has a pH of 1-6, an average particle diameter of 5-200 microns and an average primary particle diameter of 1-20 mu m, and contains pores or channels with an average diameter of 0.1-20 mu m in amounts of 5-30 vol%. Also claimed is (i) a process for the production of ZNC by interacting components (a), (b) and (c) together at 0-150 degrees C and 1-100 bar; (ii) a process for the production of polymers of 2-20C alk-1-enes by polymerisation of the alkene (preferably propylene) and optionally other comonomers at 20-150 degrees C and 1-100 bar in presence of (ZNC); (iii) polymers of propylene obtained by this process.

Abstract: Propylene-ethylene (EP) copolymers with a high rubber content (I) are obtd. by 2-stage gas-phase polymerisation in an agitated solid bed with the aid of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst system contg. a sold Ti-contg. component and an Al cpd. as cocatalyst. The process comprises: (1) polymerisation of propylene at 15-40 bar (P1) and 50-90 degrees C with a residence time of 0.5-5 hrs., followed by sepn. of the polymer obtd., and (2) polymerisation of a mixt. of ethylene (E) and propylene (P) in the presence of the stage 1 prod. and a 1-8C alkanol, for 0.5-5 hrs. at 60-100 degrees C and at a pressure (P2) in the range of 5-30 bar and at least 2 bar below P1; the ratio of partial pressures of P:E in stage (2) is (0.5:1)-(5:1), and the wt. ratio for monomer conversion in stages (1):(2) = (0.9:1)-(0.4:1). Also claimed is: (i) the above process as such, and (ii) film, fibres and moulded prods. obtd. from (I).
