    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition capable of manifesting a high stiffness, excellent thermal stability, extremely low gel content, etc., by reacting a polymer containing a propylene homopolymer and a propylene copolymer with a compound such as a polyfunctional (meth)acrylic acid derivative. SOLUTION: This composition is obtained by reacting (A) a polymer containing (i) 60-92wt.% propylene homopolymer and (ii) 8-40wt.% propylene copolymer containing 15-70wt.% comonomer of a 2-10C 1-alkene introduced into the polymer chain based on the amount of the copolymer, with (B) a compound of the formula [R is H or a 1-4C alkyl; X is a 1-30C alkyl, etc.; (n) is 2 or 3] at 180-280 deg.C under 1-100 bar pressure within the range of 0.2-10min average retention time of the reaction mixture.     Abstract: Propylene-ethylene (EP) copolymers with a high rubber content (I) are obtd. by 2-stage gas-phase polymerisation in an agitated solid bed with the aid of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst system contg. a sold Ti-contg. component and an Al cpd. as cocatalyst. The process comprises: (1) polymerisation of propylene at 15-40 bar (P1) and 50-90 degrees C with a residence time of 0.5-5 hrs., followed by sepn. of the polymer obtd., and (2) polymerisation of a mixt. of ethylene (E) and propylene (P) in the presence of the stage 1 prod. and a 1-8C alkanol, for 0.5-5 hrs. at 60-100 degrees C and at a pressure (P2) in the range of 5-30 bar and at least 2 bar below P1; the ratio of partial pressures of P:E in stage (2) is (0.5:1)-(5:1), and the wt. ratio for monomer conversion in stages (1):(2) = (0.9:1)-(0.4:1). Also claimed is: (i) the above process as such, and (ii) film, fibres and moulded prods. obtd. from (I).

    Abstract: A random copolymer (I) of propylene with other 2-10 C 1-alkenes comprises 0.7-1.4 wt.% ethylene comonomer or 0.7-3.0 wt.% 4-10 C 1-alkene. (I) has a solubility in cold xylene of 1.0-2.5 wt.% or 0.75-2.0 wt.% when the comonomer is ethylene or a 4-10C 1-alkene respectively. Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the preparation of (I) by the gas phase polymerisation of propylene and a 2-10 C 1-alkene at 50-100 degrees C and 15-40 bar in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst containing: (A) a titanium containing solid component containing at least a halogen containing magnesium compound and an electron donor; (B) an aluminum compound; and (C) at least a further electron donor compound. The ratio of partial pressure of propylene to comonomer is 400:1-15:1 and the molar ratio of (B) to (C) is 20:1-2:1; and (ii) film, fiber or molded articles containing (I).
