Abstract: N-Alkylamides of formula R-CO-NR1R2 (I) (where R is opt. substd. aryl, -NR1R2, -(CH2)n-CONR1R2, -CH=CH-CO-NR1R2; n is 1-4; x is 1-3; Y is 1-4 and R1 and R2 are opt. identical, linear or branched 1-4C alkyl) are dimerised and/or oligomerised by heating with organic peroxides at 130-200 degrees C in a protective gas atmos. The dimers and oligomers are new. The prods. can be used as high-boiling solvents and as oligomeric C-C labile synergetic cpds. for the flame-retarding and antistatic finishing of fibres and plastic foils. The prods. do not "sweat" out of plastics and have a high complex bonding capacity for metal salts.

Abstract: A flameproof thermoplastic molding material based on a styrene polymer and containing from 0.05 to 5 percent by weight of an organic bromine compound as the flameproofing agent, with or without a blowing agent, wherein the bromine compound contains a heterocyclic ring, comprising the group IN ITS MOLECULE, AND IS HEAT-STABLE UP TO AT LEAST 150 DEG C. The preferred bromine compound has the formula The molding materials may be used for the manufacture of self-extinguishing moldings, eg. foam moldings.

Abstract: Parent patent, the prepn. of finely divided expandable styrene polymers comprises allowing organic Br cpds. contg. >=3 aliphatically or cycloaliphatically bonded Br atoms in mol., to act on the expandable polystyrene particles above their softening point. The time available for Br cpd. diffusion into polymer particle is limited so that only a small marginal zone is reached by the Br cpd. In this addn., organic Br cpds., (I), are used which release 0.02-0.6 (0.1-0.3) mol. HBr for each Br equiv. in mol., when hydrolysed 3 hrs. at 100 degrees C in a 1 wt. % soln. in distilled water. Hydrolysis rate of (I) leads to optimum diffusion rate of Br cpd. into polymer particle.
