Abstract: Styrene polymers or copolymers containing bromine are manufactured by cationic polymerization of the monomer, or of the monomer plus a copolymerizable monomer of the isobutylene or nuclear-alkylated styrene type, in an organic solvent is the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst to a mean molecular weight (number average) of from 800 to 8,000 for the polymerization product. Bromine is then added to the solution without first working up to the latter. The catalyst used for the bromination is the same as that used for the polymerization. If necessary, fresh catalyst may be added before the bromination. After completion of the bromination, the reaction solution is extracted with water until it is bromide-free, and the solvent, generally a halohydrocarbon, is then stripped off. Products containing up to about 80% by weight of bromine may be obtained. They have a pale yellowish color and exhibit no significant decomposition up to 340.degree.C. They may be used as flame-proofing agents for thermoplastics.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of stable, electroconductive polymers having electrical conductivity values of greater than 10 S/cm from polyphenylenes, heteropolyphenylenes or polyacetylenes, in which from 0.1 to 75 per cent by weight of an organic aromatic diazofluoro-metal compound of the formula: Ar-(X)y in which Ar is an optionally substituted aromatic radical and X is N=N -Me-Fn in which Me is B, Ge, Si, P, As or Sb, n is 4, 5 or 6, and y is 1, 2 or 3, are added to the polymers in the absence of oxygen. In particular, a diazofluorometallate compound of the formula (I): in which X is as defined above, and R is H, alkyl, Cl, Br, I, F, OH, NO2, N(CH3)2, N(C2H5)2, C6H5, COOC2H5 or COOH, and R , R and R are R or X, is used. The electroconductive polymers can be used in electrical engineering for the production of solar cells, for the conversion and fixation of radiation, for the production of electrical and magnetic switches and electrical storage systems and for the antistatic finishing of plastics.
