Abstract: o-Aminobenzonitriles of the formula in which X and Y both denote hydrogen or halogen atoms or alkyl radicals of 1-4 carbon atoms, are prepared by heating isatin-b -oximes of the formula under reduced pressure in the presence of a solvent or diluent boiling at a temperature not lower than the boiling point of the aminobenzonitrile formed and under such conditions that the aminobenzonitrile distils off immediately. Specified solvents or diluents include phthalic acid esters and polymeric ethylene oxides. Examples are given of the manufacture of o - aminobenzonitrile, 5 - methyl - 2 - aminobenzonitrile and 2 - amino - 5 - chlorobenzonitrile. Some other isatin-b -oximes which may be treated are listed.
