    Abstract: A process for the manufacture of polyalkylenepolyamines by reacting a primary or secondary amine with a compound of the formula (I) where X is -Cl, -Br, or -OSO3H and R1 and R2 are H or saturated alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and with at least the stoichiometric amount, based on the compound of the formula I, of an aqueous solution, of from 15 to 45 percent strength, of an alkali metal hydroxide or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, at from 60 DEG to 200 DEG C., cooling the reaction mixture to a temperature at which 2 aqueous phases form, and separating off the upper phase, containing polyalkylenepolyamnines. The rate of reaction can be increased by adding catalytic amounts of compounds which initiate the polymerization of alkyleneimines.

    Abstract: Crosslinked water-soluble reaction products for the papermaking industry obtained by reacting (a) 1 part by weight of an ethyleneimine-grafted polyamidoamine obtained by condensing 1 mole of a dicarboxylic acid having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms with from 0.8 to 1.4 moles of a polyalkylene polyamine having from 3 to 10 alkyleneimine units, followed by grafting of from 2 to 8 ethyleneimine units per basic nitrogen atom onto the resulting polyamidoamine, with (b) from 0.3 to 2 parts by weight of a reaction product obtained by reacting a polyalkylene oxide having from 8 to 100 alkylene oxide units with epichlorohydrin in the presence of a Lewis acid, so that from 1.0 to 1.5 moles of epichlorohydrin are present per equivalent of hydroxyl groups in the polyalkylene oxide, at a temperature of from 20.degree. to 100.degree.C in aqueous solution or in a solution in water and a water-soluble organic solvent, the solution having a solids content of from 5 to 50% by weight, the reaction being carried to a point at which the viscosity of an aqueous solution containing 20% of the auxiliary is from 300 to 2,500 centipoises at 20.degree.C.
