The halomethylbenzoyl cyanides I are important intermediates for the synthesis of plant protection agents.

    Abstract: In the present invention there is disclosed a process for preparing derivatives of halomethylbenzoyl cyanide of the general formula I Ph-CO-CN (I), in which Ph represents a phenyl group being substituted with a chloromethyl or bromomethyl group and optionally having another or up to four substituents being inert during reaction, from halomethylbenzoyl chlorides of the general formula II Ph-CO-Cl (II), wherein Ph is as defined above. The preparation process is characterized by reacting halomethylbenzoyl chloride of the general formula II, in which Ph is as defined above with the compound releasing cyanide in the presence of a Lewis acid, optionally in an inert organic solvent or diluent, whereupon the obtained product is isolated. The proposed preparation process is readily feasible in industry and the product is obtained in high yield and extreme purity.
