Abstract: Arylsulphones of formula X-Z-O-Phe-SO2-Phe-O-Z-X (I) are produced by reaction of 4,4'-dichloro-diphenyl-sulphone (II) with appropriate cpds. (III) in a solvent, in the presence of a base; the novelty is that the solvent is mainly a dipolar aprotic solvent; Phe = 1,4-phenylene; X = Cl or H; Z = Ph, (1-4C alk(oxy)yl)-phenyl, biphenyl or naphthyl. Also claimed is the cpd. of formula (I) with gps. -Z-X = 2-naphthyl (cpd. IA). Specifically the solvent is NMP and the base is an alkali carbonate; process involves reaction of (II) with a cpd. of formula X-Z-OH (III) in the mol. ratio (II):(III):(base) =(1:2:2)-(1:2:5:3), at 120-200 (pref. 160-190) deg.C. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of high temp.-resistant thermoplastics. Use of the above type of solvent enables the prodn. of very pure (above 98%) (I) in a very high yield (96% or above), esp. the new cpd. (IA)):

Abstract: Bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-sulphone (I) is prepd. by reacting phenol with sulphuric acid in a mol. ratio of 1:1 to 25:1 at 140-230 deg.C in the absence of an inert solvent. Pref. the reaction is carried out at 160-200 deg.C and a pres. of 0.5-1.5 bar, using a mol. ratio phenol: H2SO4 of 2.1:1 to 25:1 and pref. in the presence of a sulphonation catalyst, eg. a Lewis acid such as boric acid or trifluoromethanesulphonic acid. Pref. the reaction is carried out in excess phenol in the absence of inert solvent and the excess phenol is removed by distn. during or after the initial stage, during or after the intermediate reaction-progressing stage, or after reaction is essentially complete.
