    Abstract: A ferroelectric liquid crystal device is constituted by disposing a ferroelectric liquid crystal between a pair of substrates having thereon electrodes for voltage application and provided with uniaxial alignment axes, as by rubbing, so as to provide a high pretilt angle of at least 10 degrees. A problematic liquid crystal movement in such a high-pretilt angle ferroelectric liquid crystal device is suppressed by improving a smectic layer structure therein, inclusive of a symmetry of pretilt angles at the pair of substrate boundary surfaces. Such an improved smectic layer structure is accomplished by a realigning treatment after cooling to the chiral smectic phase or in the final stage of the cooling to the chiral smectic phase as by application of an AC electric field and/or by repetitive heating-cooling in the chiral smectic phase. The improved smectic layer structure is represented by, e.g., an X-ray diffraction peak having an increased peak area and/or a decreased half-value width.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a liquid crystal element capable of preventing the deterioration of a liquid crystal material by the denaturization, etc., thereof, making a cell gap uniform within the plane and rapidly injecting smectic liquid crystals. SOLUTION: A cell 1 having a first aperture 12 and a second aperture 13 is formed by arranging a pair of substrates 11a, 11b opposite to each other. The first aperture 12 and the second aperture 13 are provided with a pressure difference. The liquid crystals having a smectic phase previously heated to a liquid phase are injected into the cell 1 for the prescribed time from the first aperture 12. The liquid crystals are packed into the cell while the liquid crystals past the inside of the cell 1 are discharged from the second aperture 13. The liquid crystals in the part of the second aperture 13 are cooled to the smectic phase before the difference pressure between the first aperture 12 and the second aperture 13 is released. As a result, the generation of the uninjected regions of the liquid crystals which arises heretofore by accompanying with the release of the differential pressure described above is averted.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the change of properties by the evaporation of a liquid crystal material at the time of liquid crystal injection and to improve a display grade by heating the liquid crystals to a temp. at which the liquid crystals attain a smectic A phase or attain the co-existing state of the smectic A phase and isotropic phase at the time of packing the liquid crystals into a cell constituted by arranging substrates opposite to each other. SOLUTION: At the time of packing the liquid crystals into the cell 1 composed of a pair of the substrates opposite to each other, an aperture 12 part which is the injection port for the liquid crystals and an effective optical modulation region 16 are sealed into a pressurization vessel 17 and an aperture 13 part which is an outflow port for the liquid crystals is installed outside this pressurization vessel. The aperture 12 is immersed at this state into a liquid crystal tray 18 filled with the liquid crystals 19 previously heated to the temp. at which the liquid crystals attains the smectic A phase or the temp. at which the liquid crystals attains the co-existing state of the smectic A phase and the isotropic phase. The inside of the pressurization vessel 17 is then pressurized. The pressure PI (the pressure in the pressurization vessel 17) acting on the aperture 12 and the pressure P2 acting on the aperture 13 are set at a relation P1>P2 and the liquid crystals 19 are injected into the cell 1 according to this pressure difference.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To uniformize orientation and to obtain equal and symmetric inversion threshold between bistable two states by subjecting the one substrate to perpendicular orientation, forming a film on the other substrate, orienting this film in one direction, and then orienting the first substrate in a different direction as second orientation. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal element has a substrate 11 on which a hybrid oriented film 15 is formed and a substrate 11' having an oriented film 15' treated by perpendicular orientation. The oriented film 15 is subjected to first orientation in one direction (shown as arrow 12) and then to second orientation in a different direction (arrow 13). The first rubbing direction 12 differs from the second rubbing direction 13 by an angle thetam. thetam is defined positive in the clockwise direction. When a liquid crystal having negative Ps is used, thetam is positive. When a liquid crystal having positive Ps is used, thetam is negative. The absolute value of Pm is preferably almost same as the apparent tilt angle thetaa of the liquid crystal.

CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal device has a ferroelectric liquid crystal 14 and a pair of substrates 11a, 11b which face each other by holding this ferroelectric liquid crystal 14 in-between, are formed with electrodes for applying voltage to the ferroelectric liquid crystal 14 respectively on the opposite surfaces and are subjected to uniaxial orientation treatments in order to orient the ferroelectric liquid crystal 14. The apparent tilt angle of the above-mentioned liquid crystal device is made larger than in the case of not applying AC by the treatment to apply the AC to the device. The inclination directions of this liquid crystal and at the boundary between the substrates are reverse directions between the upper and lower substrates and the pretilt angle is =25nC/cm .
