    Abstract: The present invention provides a thermal printer which can perform both a heat-sensitive recording operation and a heat-transfer recording operation, comprises a recording medium loading portion for removably receiving a recording medium (11) for the heat-sensitive recording operation and a recording medium for the heat-transfer recording operation; an ink sheet loading portion (70) for removably receiving an ink sheet (14) used with the heat-transfer recording operation; a recording means for recording an image on the recording medium (11); and a control means (101) for energizing the recording means to heat a predetermined number of dots when the image is recorded on the recording medium for the heat-transfer recording operation by means of the recording means and for energizing the recording means to heat a number of dots larger than the predetermined number of dots when the image is recorded on the recording medium for the heat-sensitive recording operation. The present invention also provides a facsimile system comprising the above-mentioned thermal printer, a reading means for reading an original image, and a transmission/reception means for transmitting and receiving an image signal.

    Abstract: An image reading apparatus individually reads a predetermined white reference plate by flickering light sources of the respective colors before an original image is read by sequentially turning on the light sources during one line sync period. The flickering duty ratio of the light source obtained when the white reference plate is read is set for each color so as to maximize the output value from an A/D converter within its predetermined conversion range. When an original is read, the image reading apparatus changes the emission color by switching the light source to be flickered every line sync period, and turns on the light sources of the respective colors in accordance with different duty ratios set for these colors.

    Abstract: An image forming apparatus which has a facsimile function by which it records image data received in facsimile communications and a printer function by which it records image data output from a host computer. The apparatus includes a printing mode setting device for setting the apparatus to one of a plurality of printing modes, a recording device for recording image data, a reception device for receiving facsimile image data, and a control device for causing the setting device to set the apparatus to a specific printing mode when facsimile image data received by the reception device is to be recorded, independent of any printing mode in which the apparatus has previously been set by the setting device. The plurality of printing modes include at least one of a draft mode in which image data is recorded in a thinned-out form and a high-quality mode in which recording is performed by one-direction printing. The specific mode is a two-direction recording mode.
