Abstract: A cylindrical glass body having a low water content centerline region and method of manufacturing such a cylindrical glass body for use in the manufacture of optical waveguide fiber is disclosed. The centerline region of the cylindrical glass body has a water content sufficiently low such that an optical waveguide fiber made from the cylindrical glass body of the present invention exhibits an optical attenuation of less than about 0.35 dB/km, and preferably less than about 0.31 dB/km at a measured wavelength of 1380 nm. A low water content plug used in the manufacture of such a cylindrical glass body, an optical waveguide fiber having a low water peak, and an optical fiber communication system incorporating such an optical waveguide fiber is also disclosed.

Abstract: An optical fiber and method of making, wherein the optical fiber alternates between regions having different diameters along its length, wherein the refractive index of said blank and the diameters of said fiber are chosen to result in a fiber having alternating regions of positive and negative dispersion at a wavelength which is greater than 1480 nm, yet preferably has a low net dispersion and dispersion slope. A preferred such profile consists of a core region surrounded by a cladding region, said core region comprised of an central core region which is updoped with respect to said cladding region, said central core region surrounded by a moat region which is downdoped with respect to said cladding region, and said moat region is surrounded by an annular ring region which is updoped with respect to said cladding region. In addition, a family of profiles is presented which may be used to produce very low dispersion slope fibers. When used in conjunction with alternating positive and negative dispersion regions, lower net dispersion slope can be achieved. Alternatively, the family of profiles is useful in conventional WDM applications.

Abstract: A method of making a glass article such as an optical waveguide preform is disclosed. The method comprises drawing a rod in at least two steps. In the first step an elongated, consolidated preform having an aperture therethrough is drawn to a reduced diameter preform. The second step involves drawing the reduced diameter preform into a rod, preferably at a lower temperature than the first step. The method substantially reduces the formation of inclusions in the glass article during drawing.

Abstract: A method is provided of forming an elongated glass article, comprising providing a tubular glass handle having a mandrel protruding from one end thereof, rotating the combination of mandrel and tube, and directing toward the rotating mandrel and an end portion of the tube a stream of glass particles comprising SiO 2 doped with at least 15 wt. % B 2 O 3 while reciprocating said mandrel and tube with respect to said stream to build up a porous glass coating. The mandrel is then removed from the porous glass coating and tube to form an assembly of handle and tubular porous preform. The porous preform is heated to consolidate it to a dense glass preform having an axial aperture, and to fuse the dense glass preform to the handle. NF 3 is flowed through the aperture while maintaining the temperature of the consolidated preform above 600°C but below that temperature which would cause the substantial elongation of the blank.

Abstract: A method is described of forming a tapered aperture at the end of a capillary tube bore (12). A gaseous etchant (22) such as a fluorine-containing compound flows through the bore (12) and emanates from the first end (14) of the tube (10). That tube end is heated to create a longitudinal temperature gradient. The gaseous etchant reacts with the tube (10) and enlarges that portion of the bore (12) at the first end. The resultant tapered aperture has a surface smoothness and shape that greatly facilitates the insertion of optical fibers during the fabrication of optical energy transfer devices.

Abstract: A fiber optic coupler of the type wherein first and second single-mode optical fibers, each having a core and a cladding, are fused together along a portion of the lengths thereof to form a coupling region. The fiber diameters are smaller in the coupling region than in the the remainder of the fibers. The cladding of the second fiber contains an amount of chlorine sufficient to increase the refractive index n'_2 thereof to a value greater than the refractive index n2 of the cladding of the first fiber.

Abstract: A method is described in making a fiber optic coupler, in which there is first formed an intermediate produced composed of an elongated body of matrix glass, with a plurality of optical fibers extending through the midregion of the body, the fibers being fused together along with the midregion. The diameter of the central portion of the midregion and the diameters of the fibers in the central portion are smaller than the diameters thereof at the end regions of the body. First and second portions of uncollapsed longitudinal bore extend from the midregion into the end regions of the body, and respective funnels connect the first and second bore portions to the end surfaces of the body. At least one of the fibers extends through the first bore portion and the first funnel, and at least one other of the fibers extends through the second bore portion and second funnel. A hollow filament is inserted through the first funnel and into the first uncollapsed bore portion, and is evacuated, thereby evacuating the first uncollapsed bore portion. Glue is applied to the first funnel, the glue being drawn into the first uncollapsed bore portion due to its evacuated condition.
