Abstract: Disclosed is a dispersion compensated multimode waveguide fiber link. The dispersion of essentially any wavelength can be compensated by adding a compensating waveguide fiber to the link, the compensating waveguide having a profile shape and a .lambda.p wavelength which counters dispersion caused by the original waveguide fiber of the link. Analytical expressions relating the compensator waveguide profile and .lambda.p to the original link and compensated profile and .lambda.p are provided for the embodiment which includes .alpha. profiles.

Abstract: A fiber optic coupler is formed by providing a glass tube having a longitudinal aperture extending therethrough. Glass optical fibers, each having a core, cladding and coating are disposed within the longitudinal aperture, the fibers extending beyond each end thereof. The coating is removed from that portion of the fibers in the midregion of the tube but remains on that portion of the fibers extending into the ends of the apertures. The coating can be removed prior to inserting the fibers into the tube, or it can be removed from that portion of the fibers in the midregion of the tube by oxidation, depolymerization or the like. The aperture is formed by a plurality of flattened walls, the dimensions and orientations of which are such that the cross-section of the aperture in the central region of the tube is symmetrical with respect to a plane passing through the longitudinal axis of the tube. At any cross-section of the aperture that is adjacent the coated regions of the fibers, each fiber coating contacts two walls of the aperture. The fibers are held taut to effect a tension therein, and the midregion of the tube is heated, collapsed about the fibers, and drawn to reduce the diameter thereof over a predetermined length.

Abstract: The present invention provides methods for fabricating optical fiber preforms and optical fibers. According to one embodiment of the invention, a method for making an optical fiber preform includes the steps of providing at least one sacrificial rod having an outside surface; forming a material on the outside surface of each sacrificial rod to yield a structured body, the structured body including a structured material in substantial contact with the at least one sacrificial rod; removing each sacrificial rod from the structured body; and including the structured body in the optical fiber preform. The preform may be drawn into an optical fiber. The methods of the present invention are especially useful in the fabrication of microstructured optical fibers.
