Abstract: A softening compsn. for textile materials contains 1-35% of a softening agent which comprises >=1 imidazoline deriv. of formula (I): (where R is a 13-21C aliphatic radical; n = 2 or 3; and X is H or an acyl gp. of formula RCO-. The acpds. are prepd. by reacting a fatty acid or ester (1 or 2 mols.) with 1 mol. of beta-hydroxyethyl ethylene diamine or beta-hydroxypropyl ethylenediamine. Compsns. are storage stable and are compatible with anionic detergents. A pref. compsn. contains 3-20% esp. 5-15% of the imidazolines and 4-70%, esp. 6-60% of an anionic, ionic hybrid and/or nonionic detergent, partic. 10% nonionic.

Abstract: Textile softeners consist of condensates (A) of (a) 1-1.5 mol. fatty acid or fatty acid ester of formula R-COOX (I) (where R is 11-21C aliphatic gp.; and X is H, Me or Et) with (b) 1 mol. alkyl propylene diamine oxyalkylate of formula (II): R1-N-(CH2)3-N (CH2CHR2O)xH (CH2CHR2O)zH (CH2-CHR2-O)zH (where R1 is 12-22C aliphatic gp.; R2 is H or Me; x, y and z are 0 or 1; and x + y + z = 1 or 2). Textile softener compsns. are used aq. solns. or dispersions contg. 1-15 wt. % (A) or as liquid, aq. concentrates contg. 20-35 wt. % (A). The compsns. are added esp. to last rinsing cycle of washing machines, to impart a soft hand to textiles of cellulose, wool, cellulose acetate and triacetate, polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, polyester and polypropylene. They are partic. useful for after-treatment of towelling and underwater. (A) are easily dissolved or dispersed in water. A condensate of 1 mol. (345g) adduct of 1 mol. ethylene oxide to 1 mol. stearyl propylene diamine and 1 mol. (264 g) stearic acid formed a dilutable aq. dispersion, useful as rinsing additive after washing towelling.
