Abstract: 1,247,194. Vibration damping laminates. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 4 Dec., 1968 [6 Dec., 1967], No. 57604/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] A vibration damping laminated system comprises two plates, e.g. of metal such as steel, bonded together with an interlayer comprising a graft polymer of 40-80% by weight of an equimolar mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile on 60-20% by weight of a copolymer of 30-40% by weight of vinyl acetate, 30-40% by weight of n-butyl acrylate, 10-30% by weight of di-n-butyl maleate and 5-15% by weight of a copolymerizable unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g. crotonic acid. The graft polymer may be cross-linked with a compound containing a plurality of epoxide or isocyanate groups. The graft polymer may contain minor amounts of filters, e.g. heavy spar, silicic acid, graphite, soot or a mixture thereof, and one or more plasticizers. The total thickness of the laminated system may be 1-6 mm., the thickness of the interlayer being 0À1-1 mm. of the ratio of the thickness of the plates being from 1 : 1 to 4 : 1. The graft polymer may be applied to the plates by trowelling, brushing or pouring at an elevated temperature and the system cooled under pressure between rollers. A solution of the copolymer in the mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile containing a polymerization initiator, e.g. tertiary butyl hydroperoxide may be applied between the plates and the laminated system subjected to heating at 60-180‹ C. to effect grafting.

Abstract: 1,252,895. Vibration damping laminated systems. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 3 Dec., 1968 [5 Dec., 1967], No. 57350/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] A vibration damping laminated system comprises two plates, e.g. of metal such as steel, bonded together with an interlayer comprising a graft polymer of 55-90% by weight of an equimolar mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile on 45-10% by weight of a copolymer of 30-- 50% by weight of vinyl acetate and 50-70% by weight of ethylene. The graft polymer may contain minor amounts of fillers, e.g. heavy spar, silicic acid, graphite, soot or a mixture thereof, and one or more plasticizers. The total thickness of the laminated system may be 1-6 mm., the thickness of the interlayer being 0À1-1 mm. and the ratio of the thicknesses of the plates being from 1 : 1 to 4 : 1. The graft polymer may be applied to the plates by trowelling, brushing or pouring at elevated temperature and the system cooled under pressure between rollers. A gel of the copolymer in the styrene/acrylonitrile mixture to be grafted on which contains a polymerization initiator, e.g. tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, may be applied between the plates and the laminated system subjected to heating at 60-180 C. to effect grafting.

Abstract: A composition comprises a mixture of two or more polymers which have not been externally plasticized, the polymers being compatible with each other and the second order transition temperatures of two of the polymers differing by 10 DEG to 200 DEG C. wherein at least one of the polymers is a copolymer having a chemically heterogeneous composition obtained by copolymerizing two or more monomers characterized by different polymerization speeds. Compositions exemplified are (I) polyvinyl chloride + vinyl chloride octyl acrylate copolymer and (II) polyvinyl acetate + vinyl acetate/dibutyl maleate copolymer + vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate copolymer filled with vermiculite. Specification 871,254 is referred to.ALSO:One or more resilient members are coated with a composition comprising two or more polymers that have not been externally plasticized, the polymeric components being compatible with one another and the second order transition temperatures of two of the components differing by between 10 and 200 DEG C. wherein at least one of the polymeric components is a copolymer having a chemically heterogeneous composition obtained by copolymerizing two or more monomers characterized by different polymerization speeds. In the examples steel plate is covered with (I) and (II) a composition comprising polyvinyl chloride and a vinyl chloride/octyl acrylate copolymer, (III) polyvinyl acetate, vinyl acetate/dibutyl maleate copolymer and vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate copolymer. Fillers and other resins may be added. Specification 871,254 is referred to.
