Abstract: An aqueous plastic dispersion which is based on three vinyl polymers differing in type and properties, and which additionally contains a filler, is prepared by mixing a mixture of aqueous dispersions of the polymers in question with an aqueous suspension of the filler. The most important distinguishing characteristic of the polymers mentioned is their glass transition temperature. A fibrous material is employed as the filler. The plastic dispersion is suitable as a starting material for the preparation of sheets with vibration-damping properties.

Abstract: 1440337 Adhesives comprising vinyl ester polymer dispersions HOECHST AG 12 Dee 1973 [15 Dec 1972] 57592/73 Heading C3P An aqueous adhesive comprises an aqueous vinyl ester polymer dispersion having a solids content of 40-60 wt. per cent, which contains 1-15 wt. per cent (based on the vinyl ester polymer) of polyvinyl alcohol as a protective colloid, from 1À5 to 3 wt. per cent (based on the total mixture) of a 40-70% solution of a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde resin and from 0À05 to 0À3 wt. per cent (based on the total mixture) of a water-soluble acid metal salt. The dispersion is preferably of polyvinylacetate. The metal salt may be a salt of Al, Fe, Cr, Ti, Zr, or V, specific examples being AlCl 3 , Al(NO 3 ) 3 , chromic nitrate, FeCl 3 , titanyl sulphate, zirconium oxychloride, and vanadyl sulphate. The compositions in the examples also contain butyl glycolate. The metal salt renders the adhesive more water resistant then prior adhesives based on vinyl ester polymers.

Abstract: 1,252,895. Vibration damping laminated systems. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 3 Dec., 1968 [5 Dec., 1967], No. 57350/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] A vibration damping laminated system comprises two plates, e.g. of metal such as steel, bonded together with an interlayer comprising a graft polymer of 55-90% by weight of an equimolar mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile on 45-10% by weight of a copolymer of 30-- 50% by weight of vinyl acetate and 50-70% by weight of ethylene. The graft polymer may contain minor amounts of fillers, e.g. heavy spar, silicic acid, graphite, soot or a mixture thereof, and one or more plasticizers. The total thickness of the laminated system may be 1-6 mm., the thickness of the interlayer being 0À1-1 mm. and the ratio of the thicknesses of the plates being from 1 : 1 to 4 : 1. The graft polymer may be applied to the plates by trowelling, brushing or pouring at elevated temperature and the system cooled under pressure between rollers. A gel of the copolymer in the styrene/acrylonitrile mixture to be grafted on which contains a polymerization initiator, e.g. tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, may be applied between the plates and the laminated system subjected to heating at 60-180 C. to effect grafting.
