    Abstract: ON-CHIP BUBBLE DOMAIN RELATIONAL DATA BASE SYSTEM A bubble domain chip is designed to provide the components necessary to perform all essential data-base functions. Many cross-linked loops in parallel allow the interchange of distinct columns of information. The use of an on-chip decoder achieves effective interchangeability of distinct rows of information. Thus, the basic storage structure and access modes conform to the high-level view of data implied by the relational data model, resulting in simpler programming. In addition, a plurality of comparators are provided to the plurality of storage loops to perform context search simultaneously on all the loops. This indexing loop provides an input to a bubble chip controller so that each subsequent search and compare is done only on already qualified data.     Abstract: A text editing system which is completely comprised of magnetic bubble domain components (or charge-coupled devices) is described. The essential parts of the system are a passive storage comprising a plurality of shift registers which are a convertible structure, i.e., they can be randomly accessed or sequentially accessed depending upon the state of a plurality of conversion switches. This provides great flexibility in entry, retrieval, and restoring. An active storage comprising a plurality of shift registers is used for various text editing functions, such as insertion of data, deletion of data, etc. In the active storage, an editing shift register is provided which implements the various text editing functions using techniques such as freezing data bits and bypassing data bits in order to change the order of the data and to close gaps which may occur in the data. A write decoder is provided for selective entry of text into the passive storage and a read decoder is provided for selecting the contents of a specific shift register in the passive storage for data manipulation. The conversion switches are also used to control data flow paths or directions and to maintain the proper order of the data. Control circuits are provided to coordinate and control the functions of the various storages, the decoders, and the switches. The principles used for the overall system can be implemented with bubble domain devices or with charge coupled devices.

    Abstract: Bubble domain logic apparatus and a method of processing data in the form of a stream of magnetic bubble domains which represent data by their coding (such as presence and absence of bubble domains). The data stream has a key associated with each data entity. A bubble lock at a junction directs the associated data entity to one of two possible paths. In this fashion the key associated with the data determines the processing of the data in a self-programmed fashion.

    Abstract: A very simple means for splitting or collapsing cylindrical domains which can be located anywhere on a magnetic sheet in which the domains exist. Soft magnetic materials such as permalloy are used to create strong local magnetic fields which act on the domains to split or collapse them. In one embodiment, the permalloy elements are located on both sides of the magnetic sheet, while in another embodiment these elements are located on the same side of the magnetic sheet. No extra external power (current or magnetic field) is required in these devices; the propagation field is sufficient to establish the required energy for splitting or collapsing domains.

[Also in Division H1] A magnetic storage device comprises a reading layer and a memory layer of ferromagnetic material separated by a layer of ferromagnetic material having a lower Curie temperature, the memory layer having the highest anisotropy information is stored by applying a magnetic field to the memory layer whereby each layer is magnetized in the same direction. Readout is effected by pulsing a laser on spot areas of the reading layer so that the Curie temperature of the central layer is exceeded and exchange coupling between the layers is destroyed. The magnetic vector in the reading layer rotates and induces signals in a sense winding, while the memory layer remains unaffected. The outer layers may be made of Permalloy, and the central layer of Permalloy + Cr, Mo, or Cu, or of Gd.

    Abstract: LADDER FOR INFORMATION PROCESSING Information processing is conveniently achieved by a structure which uses a novel binary switch. The switch can steer two data streams so that they will either cross one another or bypass one another, depending upon external control. A linear array of shift register loops are linked together by these flow-steering binary switches to form a storage structure which is termed a ladder. The ladder provides a variety of data structures. For example, it can alternate between LIFO (last in-first out) and FIFO (first infirst out). It can also dynamically rearrange data items according to regency of usage, in order to improve average access time to any data item. The binary switch and the ladder structure are conveniently provided using magnetic bubble domain technology, although other technologies can also be used.
