Abstract: Data recording is self-archiving by non-delete recording combined with a directory (25) that grows with each recording in a manner that all previous recordings related to the respective files or data sets are pointed to in the directory. Non-delete recording is applicable to those record media exhibiting indelible characteristics, such as write-once optical media and to rewritable media, such as magnetic recording media of all types. Each directory entry (75, 83, 86) is identified by file or data set name (80,84) and has one field (76) for each data segment currently a part of the file or data set. Each field has a pointer to its represented data irrespective of when it was recorded. Each directory entry also points (79, 85) to the entry associated with the immediately preceding recording operation on any part of the file or data set such that data changes can be traced using the directory. The directory is stored in one address end portion (25) of the data storing medium (14) while the data is stored in the opposite address end portion (26), the directory is preferably at the low addresses while the data is at the high addresses. The directory recording is at ever increasing addresses while the data recording is at ever decreasing addresses.

Abstract: A data recorder, preferably of the magnetooptic type, employs a rotating record storage disk (30). The record storage disk has a track starting primary data storing sector circumferentially adjacent to the track starting sector or a small plurality of alternate data storing sectors which are not addressable directly by mechanisms outside of the recorder as are the primary recording sectors. Whenever a one of the primary sectors in a given track is found to be defective, then one of the alternate sectors in that same track receives data from a one of the primary storing records of sectors in the same track. A small number of alternate sectors are selected to extend circumferentially for creating an elapsed scan time over the element of sectors not less than the elapsed time required for the recorder to switch from scanning one track to scanning an adjacent one of the tracks. In a magnetooptic recorder, the elapsed time selected for scanning the small plurality of alternate sectors is also not less than the time to reverse the magnetic biasing field for erasing and recording on the disk. Alternate sectors provide both for alternate data storage and for the preparatory steps of track jumping or switching and magnetic field bias reversal. Second alternate ones of the tracks are selected in the event all of the alternate sectors in a given track are filled with data from defective ones of the primary sectors in the same track as the alternate sectors.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a re-writable data storage member (10) comprising a plurality of spaced apart addressable data storage areas (12) for recording and storing data and a plurality of non-data storage areas (15) interposed between adjacent ones of the addressable data storage areas for recording signals not representing data, the storage member being adapted to be scanned in a direction over the storage areas. According to the invention the storage member is characterised in that one of the addressable data storage areas contains first machine readable indicia indicating that the storage member contains data which is not to be changed from any original recording of the data, another of the addressable data storage areas contains second machine readable indicia indicating whether or not the storage member has been erased of data in its entirety, and each of the non-data storage areas contains third machine readable indicia indicating whether or not one of the respective adjacent addressable data storage areas can be written into. The invention also relates to a data storage system comprising a re-writable data storage member as above and to a method of operating such a data storage system.

Abstract: A large capacity data storing disk includes a volume table of contents (VTOC) which identifies allocated ones of data storage tracks and identification of the data contents therein, indications of unallocated data storage track and an indication of which of the data storage tracks on the large capacity disk surface are unformatted. The indications may also include indications of unallocated "erased" tracks that do not contain data residuals from previous recordings. Those unallocated tracks having such erased condition in a count key data record format (CKD) require a home address record on each of the formatted tracks. The home address record may include indications of rotational position of defects to be skipped over during the recording and readback operations. A specific embodiment of the invention using a magnetooptic record medium is described.

Abstract: An updatable and expandable directory structure and resultant access procedures emulating a write-once or indelible record medium (20) to a rewriteable record medium as to accessing characteristics. The directory is indexed; one directory header for a first set of files indexes another set of files. Sector clusters or data extents are managed such that random recording from any file proceeds independently of write-once characteristics. The directory is stored on the medium as data is recorde. Each directory entry contains an archival history of recording of a related data file in the medium. Both logical and physical addressing is employable.

Abstract: A unique and permanent identifier is provided for removable media. The identifier is preferably recorded in a previously unused or reserved portion of the media and can be generated from a combination of the originating drive serial number and the current date and time with a random number concatenated thereto. When a piece of media is loaded into a drive, the drive examines the reserved area for the presence of an identifier. If not present. the drive generates and records an identifier before performing whatever disk access operations have been requested. If the identifier is present, the drive is prevented from overwriting the identifier with a new one and the disk access operations are performed immediately. Once the media is provided with its identifier, the media, and any errors associated with the media, can be tracked throughout its life.

Abstract: A data file having a plurality of data blocks is divided into one or more transfer units of data blocks. Before data storage, each transfer unit of data blocks is subjected to its own data compression cycle to create a group of compressed data blocks. The size of the data transfer unit, in bytes, is selected to be facile for addressing and retrieving individual recorded groups of compressed data blocks while providing good channel utilization and compression efficiency. Also the data-transfer unit size is selected in part based upon data storage efficiency, i.e. the storage of the compressed data should fill as many addressable data storage areas as possible. Upon recording each group of compressed data bytes, an entry is made into a file directory for enabling addressing the recorded compressed data blocks.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a data storage device comprising a circular disc (30), a data storage medium on at least one surface of the disc, a spiral track extending within the storage medium about the axis of the disc, and a plurality of data storage sectors formed on the track. According to the invention the storage device is characterised in that the storage medium is formed with a reference mark (100) extending radially from the axis of the disc, and the data storage sectors are arranged in groups extending along the spiral track, one end of each group of sectors being located adjacent to one of the points of intersection of the reference mark with the spiral track.
