    Abstract: On electronic typewriters which have the ability to record into a small working memory those characters, functions and escapements which are keyed at the keyboard, it is many times advantageous to be able to place the carrier and the print point over a character which has been previously typed without using repeated backspaces. Disclosed herein is a feature for an electronic typewriter which permits the operator to easily align the print point with a character on the page by positioning a reference mark on the card holder or print carrier in relation to a previously printed character and then through keyboard control cause the carriage to shift its position such that the print point is then exactly aligned with the character printed. The positioning of the carrier such that the reference mark is in relation to the desired print point is accomplished by a backspace operation and the repositioning or causing of the carrier to assume a position immediately over the subject character is accomplished by keyboard control through the electronics of the typewriter to cause the carrier to shift a predetermined distance.

    Abstract: A contact type thermal sensing apparatus for a hot roll fusing unit includes a fail-safe detector to insure intimate contact between the thermal transducer and the monitored roll surface. The fail-safe detector also insures intimate contact between an over temperature sensing device and the monitored roll surface. The thermal transducer includes a thermally and electrically conductive contact which is held against the surface of the rotating conductive fuser roll. The output of the transducer is utilized to control the amount of heat supplied to the roll. A second thermally and electrically conductive contact is held against the surface of the rotating conductive roll and includes a thermal fuse which prevents further heat application to the roll should the surface thereof become overheated. The fail-safe detector comprises an electrical continuity circuit which includes the two contacts and the conductive roll. If either of the contacts becomes separated from the roll, electrical continuity therebetween is broken and the detector output prevents further heat application to the roll. The fail-safe detector thus insures that the transducer and thermal fuse contacts are intimately contacting the roll thereby preventing excessive overheating of the roll occasioned by the loss of such contact.

    Abstract: A method, system, and product in a data processing system are disclosed for managing data transmitted from a first end node to a second end node included in the data processing system. A logical connection is established between the first end node and the second end node prior to transmitting data between the end nodes. An instance number is associated with this particular logical connection. The instance number is included in each packet transmitted between the end nodes while this logical connection remains established. The instance number remains constant during this logical connection. The instance number is altered, such as by incrementing it, each time a logical connection between these end nodes is reestablished. Thus, each packet is associated with a particular instance of the logical connection. When a packet is received, the instance number included in the packet may be used to determine whether the packet is a stale packet transmitted during a previous logical connection between these end nodes.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for mediating a sequence of transactions across a fabric in a data processing system are implemented. A fabric bridge orders a preceding transaction and a subsequent transaction according to a predetermined protocol. Using the protocol a determination is made whether the subsequent transaction may be allowed to bypass the previous transaction, must be allowed to bypass the previous transaction, or must not be allowed to bypass the preceding transaction. Transactions include load/store (L/S) system memory and L/S to input/output (I/O) device, and direct memory access (DMA) to system memory and DMA peer-to-peer transactions.
