    Abstract: The present invention relates to apparatus for vertical magnetic recording in a magnetisable recording medium of the type comprising a magnetic transducer (14) having means (12) for generating a magnetic field and a recording gap, means for positioning the magnetic transducer so that the recording gap is in close proximity to a magnetisable recording medium, means for producing relative motion between the magnetic transducer and a recording medium, and means (10) for repeatedly energising the magnetic field generating means so as to generate a magnetic field repeatedly and produce a series of magnetic transitions in the portions of a recording medium which are positioned successively adjacent to the gap. … Apparatus according to the invention is characterised in that the means for energising the magnetic field generating means provides unidirectional energising pulses of relatively short duration so that the magnetic field is a bipolar magnetic field and the magnetic transitions are also bipolar, resulting in RZ ("return to zero") recording in the recording medium. … The invention also relates to a method of vertical magnetic recording in a magnetisable recording medium which results in RZ recording in the recording medium.

    Abstract: METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLED GENERATION OF WALL TOPOLOGY IN MAGNETIC DOMAINS Magnetic domains with defined wall topologies are controllably generated from a domain having known characteristics A "mother" bubble domain of a known wall state is generated by nucleation. The mother domain is stretched and split in the presence of a magnetic field directed across the separation area. A pair of Bloch lines is generated in every splitting process. The assignment of the lines to either one or the two resulting domains depending upon the wall state of its mother domain and the direction of the directed magnetic field. Instead of the directed magnetic field, velocity inducing forces can be applied to the elongated domain. The effect desired is to incline the wall magnetization in the elongated section of the domain. Controlled resplitting of domains having Bloch lines increases the number of Bloch lines in one domain to generate any predesignated wall state. The multiplicity of states which can be controllably generated anticipates their utilization beyond binary bit coding.

    Abstract: BUBBLE DOMAIN LATTICE BUFFER ARRANGEMENT Bubble domains in an enclosed lattice are translated for data accessing and buffered by providing stripe domains on both ends of a bubble lattice parallel to the direction of the bubble domain propagation. The stripe domains elongate at one end and contract at the other end in the positioning of a column of information carrying bubble domains into a column accessing device. Current in conductors at each end of the lattice and/or in propagation conductors near the column accessing devices change the shape of the stripe arrays so that the interposed bubble lattice is propagated while maintaining lattice integrity. Any one or all of the rows of bubble domains in the lattice file can be translated to position information carrying bubble domains for column accessing.
