Abstract: A method for selecting data storage media for demount in an automated storage library, and an automated storage library and program product therefor are disclosed. Preemptive demount of storage media is permitted when all peripheral storage devices in the library are occupied and one or more of such devices remains inactive for a predetermined time. Storage media may be demounted to service existing mount requests, provided the peripheral storage devices in which the media are mounted are inactive. There is also a need, however, to ensure the availability of an empty device to service future mount requests, particularly in libraries having only a single gripper mechanism. Thus, even when no mount requests are pending, the status of the peripheral storage devices is continually monitored. If the peripheral storage devices are all occupied, and one or more of such devices remains inactive for the predetermined time, the least recently used storage medium is demounted and transferred to a storage cell in the library.

Abstract: A method and system in an optical storage disc drive for conserving laser power after the reading or writing of data from or to an optical storage disc via a laser light beam generated by a laser light source within the optical storage disc drive, wherein the optical storage disc contains multiple data layers therein. An optical storage disc is provided wherein the optical storage disc includes an outermost data layer and successive multiple interior data layers therein for the storage of data. Thereafter, the laser light beam is focused at an interior data layer of the optical storage disc in order to read or write data from or to the interior data layer. Data is then read from or written to the interior data layer, in response to focusing the laser light beam at the interior data layer. Then, the laser light beam is automatically refocused at the outermost data layer of the optical storage disc if the optical storage disc drive enters a quiescent mode after the reading or writing of the data, such that upon refocusing, the laser light source experiences a decrease in laser power, thus promoting an extension of the life of the laser light source. The laser light beam can then be refocused at the next succeeding data layer of the optical storage disc, in response to terminating the quiescent mode, or in response to a particular user input.

Abstract: A power saving method and apparatus while maintaining an operational or near-operational state for computer memory disk drives. A microprocessor implements microcode instructions to determine if a disk drive is inactive. This is done by checking a control unit through an interface to see if any files are currently opened or data is being transferred by the disk device. If no files are opened and/or no data transfers are occurring, the drive is considered inactive. If theinactive period continues for a period of time which is greater than a predetermined reference activity level, then actions are taken to reduce the rotational velocity of the drive spindle motor to its lowest operational level, or just below the lowest operational level without stopping the disk. The spindle motor is accessed by the microprocessor through a spindle motor control unit. In the case of a constant linear velocity disk drive, the spindle motor is indirectly controlled by the microprocessor sending a message to an actuator to move a data head to a track that is near the outer periphery of the disk medium. In order to maintain a constant linear velocity, the spindle control slows the angular velocity of the motor resulting in a reduction of power consumed. When it is necessary to access data again, thedrive enters an active state and the head is moved by a microprocessor "seek" command. In the case of a constant angular velocity disk drive having selectablespeeds, the microprocessor controls the motor speed directly. The microprocessor, upon determining that the disk has been inactive for a predetermined threshold period, selects a constant speed that is the lowest operation speed available. This results in a power saving mode being implemented for the disk drive. The drive is returned to normal operational speed by a microprocessor "seek" command. For further savings, the motor is stopped or "spun down" when left inactive for a longer period of time.

Abstract: The amount of tape wound on the hub of a reel can be determined by the tape drive by using a force/acceleration relationship. An electrical power which provides a certain torque to the motor (2) is applied to the reel drive. The torque imparts a fixed rotational displacement over a fixed period of time. The rotational displacement is measured by a tachometer (7). The angular acceleration of different inertias results in different rotational displacement over the set period of time which can be used to indicate the amount of tape on the reel since the inertia of the other items, the motor, the clutch and the hub, remains the same.
