    Abstract: PURPOSE:To industrially advantageously obtain an alpha-sulfofatty acid ester useful in a field of cleaning agent, especially detergent for fiber cleaning, and having good hue in high yield and enhanced sulfonating ratio by using a vegetative and/or zootic oil and fat as a raw material. CONSTITUTION:When alpha-sulfone fatty acid ester is produced from a vegetative and/or zootic oil and fat, the objective compound usable as a substitute in production of cleaning composition and having god hue is obtained by a method capable of carrying out large-scale industrial production through (a) hydrolysis process of the oil and fat to fatty acids, (b) hydrogenation process of the fatty acids, preferably of distilled fatty acids obtained by further distilling the fatty acids, (c) esterification process of the hydrogenated fatty acids obtained in the process (b), (d) process for distilling the fatty acid esters obtained in the process (c), preferably in the presence of an alkali substance of 5-500ppm based on the fatty acid esters and (e) sulfonation, neutralization, bleaching processes of the distilled fatty acid esters obtained in the process (d).

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent a catalyst from being formed into fine grains and to obtain a catalyst excellent in activity, selectivity, durability, etc., by allowing an aluminum hydroxide or aluminum oxide support to hold copper-iron-aluminum atoms in a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:As a carrier for hydrogenation catalyst, aluminum hydroxide or aluminum oxide or a mixture thereof is used. This carrier is allowed to hold Cu, Fe, Al, and Zn so that their atomic ratio (atomic ratio of the whole catalyst including the carrier) satisfies Cu/Fe/Al/Zn=1/(0.4-2.5)/(0.5-5.0)/(0-1.0). At this time, instead of urea, the hydroxide or carbonate of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal is used as a precipitant. By this method, the catalyst can be prevented from being formed into fine grains, and activity, selectivity, durability, and filterability can remarkably be improved.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the elution quantity of aluminum ions in waste water without damaing catalyst performance by adjusting pH of reaction liquid in the specified range without cooling after completion of aging. CONSTITUTION:Aging is continued for 1-3 hours while maintaining pH at 9.5-13 and at the sedimentation reaction temperature of 60-150 deg.C to complete the sedimentation reaction. After that, while the temperature range of 60-150 deg.C is maintained, acid such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid or its water solution is dropped into slurry containing sediments of respective aged catalyst components and its pH is adjusted to 5-9. Then, sediments are separated, washed and dried, and the dried substance is burnt to manufacture a catalyst. When pH is adjusted to 5-9, excessive aluminum ions existing in the filtrate are sedimented on the surface of catalyst and not remaining in the filtrate. A catalyst of high activity can easily be manufactured without the necessity of troublesome draining process after manufacturing of catalyst by said process.

CONSTITUTION:A higher fatty acid ester (e.g., methyl ester of coconut coil fatty acid or palm fatty acid) is reduced in the presence of a copper-iron- aluminum-zinc catalyst (at 1:0.4-2.5:0.1-2.0:0.1-2.0 atomic ratio of Cu:Fe:Al:Zn) under conditions of 130-350 deg.C and 10-300kg/cm hydrogen pressure, preferably 180-300 deg.C and 50-200kg/cm hydrogen pressure to afford the aimed corresponding alcohol.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a higher alcohol with suppressed byproduct formation without shortening catalyst life by hydrogenating an oil-and-fat or fatty acid ester in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and a specified amount of a basic substance. CONSTITUTION: An oil-and-fat (e.g. coconut oil) or fatty acid ester (e.g. coconut oil fatty acid methyl ester) is hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst (e.g. a copper-chromium oxide) and 0.1-1000ppm, based on the oil-and-fat or fatty acid ester, of a basic substance (e.g. a methanol solution of sodium hydroxide) to obtain the objective higher alcohol. This method needs no pretreatment such as distillation, and the hydrogenation can preferably be continued for a long time without shortening catalyst life, with suppressed formation of byproducts such as dialkyl ethers, alkyl methyl ethers or hydrocarbons.
