    Abstract: In the future it is expected that where a mobile station is within communication range of other terminals in both a cellular network and a WLAN, the available data rate, throughput and system capacity will favour the use of the WLAN. No cooperation protocol exists between cellular and WLAN networks, however. The invention discloses a method of storing in a database, information relating to the coverage area of a plurality of local wireless networks and monitoring the location of the mobile station. The monitored location is compared with the stored coverage area infonnation and a signal is produced in or to the mobile station to alert it to the fact that one of wireless networks is nearby. A fixed installation eg for use as a system controller and a mobile station for use in the method are also described.

    Abstract: A wireless communications system 300 includes a wireless serving communication unit 322 serving a plurality of remote units 312-316 with a communication resource 318-320. The at least one wireless serving communication unit 322 includes a transmitter (421, see figure 4) for transmitting data on an outbound communication resource, and a receiver (422, see figure 4) for receiving a communication on an inbound communication resource, wherein said inbound and outbound resources have a variable communication resource offset. Said resource offset may be a frequency difference between inbound and outbound resources in FDD or a inbound and outbound timeslot separation in TDD. Information relating to said resource offset may be encrypted and transmitted to at least one of said remote units. Also disclosed is a communication unit 322-332, 312-316 adapted to operate in said communications system 300, and a method of communication. By using a variable communication resource offset, the potential for a third party to jam a communication between the wireless serving unit 322 and a remote unit 312-316 is reduced.

    Abstract: A base transceiver 3 used for radio communication with one or more distant transceiver units 5 (mobile stations) is operable to apply a downlink interference detection mode wherein (i) the base transceiver periodically generates and sends a test signal to the one or more distant transceiver units; (ii) the base transceiver senses whether or not a response signal is sent, possibly within a predetermined time interval, by a distant transceiver in response to receipt of the test signal; and (iii) if no response signal is detected the base transceiver generates an interference detection signal. The base transceiver may further issue an auxiliary control signal to a receiver to initiate identification of the interference level on the downlink channel and possibly distinguish between the following interference conditions: (i) the downlink transmitter has a fault causing noise, (ii) the downlink transmission is subject to interference or (iii) no distant transceiver has received the transmitted test signal. Furthermore the base transceiver may send an interference detection signal to a system controller 7 which may in response change one of its operating parameters to avoid the interference. A method of operation of the base transceiver and a transceiver for use as the distant transceiver are also described.

    Abstract: A mobile radio communications transceiver M1, M2, M3, which is operable in a communications system to communicate with one of a plurality of base transceivers B1, B2, B3 etc. in a cellular network, the mobile transceiver operable to receive signals from candidate base transceivers within its range of possible communication and to extract and compare information from the received signals to select one of the base transceivers with which the mobile transceivers is to communicate with, if necessary by handover from the currently selected base transceiver, wherein the mobile transceiver is operable so that the information extracted and compared includes information describing estimates of the distances from the mobile transceiver to the candidate base transceivers. Furthermore the mobile transceiver may use information about both the distance to and quality of service of (for example signal strength) the base transceivers to compile and maintain a preference table of candidate base transceivers. Furthermore the mobile transceiver may calculate a rating value based on signal strength and distance measurements of each of the base transceivers to determine their ranking in the preference table.

    Abstract: A mobile uses TDOA measurements of standard signals of a predefined type, such as control bursts, from neighbouring base stations for location. The system protocols may be based on TETRA and the standard data from the Broadcast network channel (BNCH.) The neighbouring base stations may be determined from the handoff list provided by the serving station. A sample of BCNH signal may be stored and correlated in order to detect the incoming signal. The system may use a digital time matched filter and may request that neighbouring stations repeatedly transmit a measurable signal on all available channel time slots.
